The "PLAN"

Hey all! I just got my first Toyota 4Runner 2003 Sport Edition V8 with 100,005mi.
She is stock except for the fresh powder coat on the underside to kill the rust from her previous life in the East Coast, she's now a Colorado car! The point of this post is act as a jump off point for people who like me have purchased a used 4runner and want a clear list of the things that should be done to ensure many more years of reliable driving and protection. I have no records of any of her past maintenance and would prefer to change everything now then to leave it to chance.

Here is my overhaul plan:


1) Putting in 5W30 Mobile 1 Full Synthetic with Fram 3x filter (no Bosch crap here!)
2) New Denso iridium-SK20R11 plugs...maybe wire harness, not sure what to get....

3)I wanna go K&N cold air intake 44?60? etc.(anyone have gains from there cold air setup they could share?)

4) Fully lube the chassis (zurk fittings) with HQ Mobil 1 full synthestic

5) flush the Tranny with full synthestic

6) New ceramic brake pads

7) flush brake fluid

8) I want to replace the belt and water pump too, but i need to check if it has been done recently...i believe there is suppose to be a sticker somewhere that tells when/if it was done


**Notes: I was gonna do a fuel filter but then! I found out its in the tank so (f-that)

Definitely do the full synthetics for oil, I have done it and it's great. Always! I will eventually do my tranny, diffs, etc. for the synthetics.

I personally, and others, do not go for the CAI, it's a waste of money and time. It looks cool and that's about it. I and ARK went for the AFE Drop In filter, dry, so there's no oil to mess with or foul the MAF. It's only about $50 to do it and it's worth the money rather than doing the CAI and better than the OEM filter. I'd also let you know that the 4R comes stock with a "CAI" since it draws air from the fender/wheelwell.
The aftermarket CAI's actually draw hot air from the engine bay, therefore not qualifying them as a true CAI. There are guys on here that got the CAI by K&N and thought they'd love them but realized later on that they didn't for various reasons. Whether it was causing sensors to go off or issues with the engine and air mixtures. Just my .02.

Welcome! Congrats on your new purchase, the 4th gen T4Rs are solid. You made a good choice lol.

Here's my $0.02 on your plan:

Good choice. I think stock filters are actually pretty high quality too, just another option.

I used NGK iridiums, no real need for new coil packs though.

I share the same sentiments as snowbrdr033. Stock intake provides more cold air than the K&N ever could. Swap in a higher-flow AFE filter and you're good.

Make sure you hit all 4 u joints and both slip yokes.

5) flush the Tranny with full synthestic

Probably couldn't hurt. I need to do a fluid change on mine as well, but I'll probably stick with the Toyota WS fluid.

6) New ceramic brake pads

Nice, good idea. Make sure you check your calipers for frozen pistons too. Be prepared, it's a common issue.

7) flush brake fluid

Do this early and often to help prevent frozen caliper pistons.

Yup, sticker should be on the radiator fan shroud or under the hood somewhere. If you go to the toyota owner's website and input your VIN, it might return some service records too.
