the Rescue Runner build thread

What happened? Flush or solenoids or something less than replace wouldn't work?
Flushing was no guarantee of a fix and realistically driving 120+ miles on a slipping transmission will pretty much destroy any transmission. Rebuilding one would cost more than buying another one. I paid 1200 including freight for one with 60k less miles on it than mine. No way you can have one rebuilt for that cost.

Replaced the fuel pump(again) today... Anyhow I had never pressure checked the pump I swapped in, but when I did today I got 31psi, no where near enough. Swapped in a new pump and was instantly at 52psi and my hard start when warm and lean codes are gone, also it cutting out and bogging down under load or acceleration is good as well.

What pump did you go with? I need to do this.

Your gonna cringe when I say.... But a Bosch - now before you all go freaking out on me and telling me how you never put a Bosch part on a Toyota other than maybe wiper blades... I really had no options. It was that or an airtex pump. NAPA had both in stock and I needed to have it today, I am driving to Seattle area for work for the next week and so I couldn't wait till they could get me the denso pump on Tuesday -ironically from Seattle... Anyhow I thought about just limping the runner up there and picking it up up there, but the drive down on Friday was suck a PITA and its been getting worse the more I drive it.

The nice thing is if this pump takes a crap on me(and it will one way or the other)/Napa will let me swap it out for the denso pump as long as I pay the difference under the warranty. Bosch pump was $97 at my cost, and the denso pump was $189 list -I didn't get my cost on it cause it wasn't in stock, but I'm guessing around $150-60.

Eh... ones better than the other.

one was better than the other till that little pop-up canopy scuffed and scratched the side of it.... damn wind!

thanks again for your help getting those rear control arms in.

yeah jaketino and i replaced all my rear control arms on sunday, the top two were toast, the bushing had seperated fron the control arm and was all slippy sloppy in the ends... no more taking 3 lanes of freeway when i get on the brakes. just took it to get an alignment today, drove tones better -the last shop i had do the alignment sucked. there is only one shop in the portland metro area i will take my vehicles to, and that is alignment specialties in aloha.

now i need to replace rear axle seals, and rear shocks. the bilstines are junk and cant hold the weight. im gonna go with a fox shock in the rear for a 4th gen 4runner... its a progressive valving vs icons digressive. i think i will like it better. i also am gonna get another ARB twin compressor the this, being as i used the other one in the GX.

i will be ordering a RTT here in the next month -CVT Shasta summit series. im gonna be needing one for work. i just picked up two sets (4 lamps) of PIAA lp570s for less than the price of one kit. mounted one set on the runner and i think ill save the other set for the GX. man they make my headlights pale. its almost as much light as the 50" light bar on the GX. and i do like the PIAAs better, better focus on the light.

monday i drove it back up to Tacoma area pulling my trailer to pick up some work materials, i didnt check mileage independently, but round trip i managed to pull 13.6 mpg in the runner -unleaded going up, loaded coming down. i figure thats pretty good for my rig. i kept my speed around 66mph too. it towed just fine, and i was happy i had replaced the links. i dont even want to think about how scary that drive might have been had i not changed them, im sure having better rear shocks and the new alignment would have made it even better. honestly i hardly knew the trailer was there. ive been very impressed with my little trailer.

as soon as i get the tent im gonna be working more on getting the trailer set up for camping -gonna build a rack for the trailer for the tent to sit on, that will be removable so the trailer can double as a utility trailer(its original intent). im still deciding on what color to paint it. im thinking either grey or black. either way im gonna put a spray in bedliner in it and on the bottom half of it along the rocker panels. i also plan on mounting two more 5gal nato fuel cans as well as dual group 31 deep cycle batters on it.

so a side note to the fuel pump issue, because i had replaced the pump just over a year ago with another pump(2 actually -one worked fine, but was a 320lph pump i swapped it out for a used stock pump....) the second pump, the used pump worked and pumped fuel so i though g2g, and never bothered to actually get the fuel pressure tested... anyhow long story short it still ran like shit, i bought a new mas air flow sensor (the 96-98 sensors are flipping stupid spendy like $700) and it still ran like crap so that was the reason we bought the GX, i was just tired of chasing my tail on this... anyhow so because of how it continued to run i thought that maybe i had a plugged cat, it would run and idle fine but if you got on the gas it would stumble and fall on its face and back fire up in the intake ect and just had no power. and combine that with getting 100mi to a tank i was sure i had a plugged cat, so i pulled the cat and punched it out (took it and had it smogged first, and it passed) then that night i hallowed it out and put it back in..... same chit! runs like crap, wont rev past 3500rpms, no power backfires into the intake...

so i break down and go buy a fuel pressure testing kit. 32psi at the tank, no restriction -i started just before the fuel pressure regulator and worked my way back to the tank and it never changed. now the fsm states 33-38 at idle but i could only muster 32 at best. so i went and put a new pump in and instantly was at 51 psi at the tank. its up to the FPR to set my idle and everything else, but i now have the pressure i need to run throughout the RPM band. i have not had a problem sense and my 171 code is gone as well as getting 200mi to a tank again.

also i have not had on CEL about the hallowed cat, so at this point im not buying the URD rear 02 simulator like i had planned. i wont do that until i get a code. either that or ill buy a used cat, cause i actually dont like the sound now without the cat, its too ricey and loud.

dropped the truck off this morning to a detail shop to have the interior detailed. its never had the interior detailed as long as ive owned it, so i figured why not. hopefully it wont come out like last time i had a shop do the exterior... they royally F'ed it up and burned through the pain in several places. anyhow ill post pics up when its back.

I have those same pair of IPF's in a box in my garage. I typically only buy PIAA lighting (can't beat the quality IMO), but how do you like the IPF's?

I've said this before, one of my favorite rigs on the forum. Built with real purpose in mind. Post pics of the clean interior when you get her back.

its getting dark otherwise i would. it looks ok, i had some serious stains, so they didnt all come out -20 years and 300k+ mi... what do you expect lol. anyhow im not overly impressed, they guy seamed scattered and i could see that in his work, im glad i only paid $100, -he was the only one who could do it today so that was a big plus. leave friday again for a week for work so thats why i went with this guy.

as far as IPF vs PIAA, i am a huge PIAA fan, but those IPFs are awesome! i loved them. i was running a PIAA 100w ion bulb in them and they were amazing. the patter was one of the best i have ever had, almost like a flood with a super bright hot spot in the middle. was amazing for back roads and late at night or bad weather. i just actually pulled those IPFs off and replaced them with a set of PIAA LP570 only because they are LEDs and draw less power. these LP570s are probably the best light i have ever had. they will give a run for the money to my 50" Totron LED bar on the GX.

Well that's good to hear, I've never ran IPF's before and was wondering how the beam and pattern were. I have those IPF's plus another set of PIAA 520i Fogs in the garage (I'm a sucker for good deals) plus my PIAA's on the truck with a cheap 22" LED bar. Once maintenance is squared away I'd like to get a set of the ditch light brackets and put the new PIAA RF cubes on the ditch brackets, then do the IPf/PIAA combo on the front like you did.

Thanks for replying man.

I have not run the RF cubes, but the IPFs will blow the PIAAs away you have. IMO IPF and PIAA are neck n neck with quality, PIAA just has a larger selection.

id have no hesitation to put them up against any rigid bar or baja designs light or any other light in the price range, or say 2 or 3 set vs one of the bigger bars -price for price. -again consider that the PIAAs are only using 2 LED chips per light as apposed to the row of chips in the bars... if you ask me the technology in the PIAAs are by far superior to anything on the market.

PIAA is definitely leading the way with QUALITY lighting, both halogen and LED. IMO Rigid and Baja aren't even close when you see the pictures of the new RF light bars quality of light and the quality of the product. I even have PIAA wiper blades on my truck (came free when I bought my 520's). Those blades have lasted for quite some time, plus the headlight bulbs that I bought nearly 3 years ago.

I'm looking forward to getting these IPF's on and have some good driving lights to go with my PIAA fogs.
