Since the interior dome lights have been upgraded to LEDs, the inside is nice and bright. The area behind the vehicle, under the hatch, was a little two dim for my liking. An item sat on the rear bumper would be in shadow from the edge of the storage platform, and the single source of light in general was making problematic shadows. I have had these little white LEDs for a few years now, and it’s time to do something useful with them.

The plan was to put a few of them in the rear hatch plastic piece, but the threaded portion was too long for this, so I scored it, cutting most of the way through, all the way around it, then broke the excess off. It is soft aluminum, so being carful is key. It is easy to cut right through and sever the wires.

There are lots of complicated calculations and formulae to use to plan out how many light sources you need, given the amount of lumens the LEDs put out. What I did though, is decide that five LEDs seems “about right” and that a two here and three there hole pattern should be “pretty good.” At this stage of the project is also discovered that it is quite easy to tighten the nut enough that the whole LED unit snaps in half.

I drilled 5/16” holes through the plastic substructure of the plastic panel as ran my wires through them to keep them contained. I ran all the LEDs together with 18 Gauge wire and heat shrink butt splices. After carful consideration, I used green and blue wire for this project, because that is what I have in that size.

I tested it out in the dark garage, and wondered if it would be bright enough. I started having second thoughts, and wondering if I should have added more LEDS. At this point I found out one of the LEDs was wired wrong from the factory, so I had to cut it all up and reverse that one.

I tested it off the dome light wiring to make sure it would work as intended. It did! Miracles can happen.

I ran wires off the dome light into the hatch, pulling them through with welding wire. I put in a plug with more heat shrink butt connectors, so I can take the panel off and on here. Not pictured is the plug, it is a repurposed OEM connector. Keeping it all OEM! Oh wait that connector was off a jeep, wrong OEM.

I cut the corner off of this rubber piece and ran my wires in its place there. This is how the wires get from behind the metal panel out to the plastic one.

At this point I put it all together and one of the LEDs was out again. Good thing I got the 12 pack. The wire moving around fatigued the solid wire between the diode and resister. After replacing the LED, I shot a squirt of hot glue in the void of the aluminum housing to keep the wires from flexing in there. I swear, when I start out on an automotive project, I don’t intend to use hot glue. It just keeps happening.

They turn on when the rear dome light is on. They work in whatever function the dome light switch is on, ON, DOOR, etc. I thought about adding an additional switch to override, but I don’t think I need it. These have had a lot of rough road and washboard testing now and still work great.

I have had them on for well over an hour at a time and they draw so little power that the 4runner still starts fine. I love having all that light around back, it is super useful.
