"The Sequel"

after reading through another build thread, I came to realize that the OME 890 springs may have been marked "A" and "B" to identify which one goes on the drivers side....this I did not know. and I bet that is why my drivers side sits about 1/2" lower... gonna have to switch them out tomorrow, or at least remove them to compare height.

bought myself some inner tie rods, and the steering rack guide replacement parts. hopefully this tightens up everything up front. the ride is beyond improved now. cant get enough of it.

for now riding with sway bars off, its soo wobbly, I love it!

Simple Green, you are beautiful

I didn't realize how dirty this thing really was till i sprayed a little simple green....can actually see the blue NKG wires now (before I had to wipe them clean to read "NKG" just to ocnfirm they were NKG!!)

no before shots of the engine bay, but here is after. after

its not quick to notice, but I discovered that the battery tie-down was non-existent. Upon closer inspection the previous owner used a shoelace to pull the battery towards the driver's side fender. gonna need a new one stat. maybe that was my mystery speed-bump clunk!

and all my door jams were disgusting. it was like this is every door. all better now!

Today I wired my new (Christmas gift) driving camera

used this "add-a-fuse" LINK

I was unable to remove the A-Pillar do to the screws being stripped:

but was able to pry the edge up enough to push the wire in, same thing with the headliner. tapped into the ACC fuse so it automatically turns on upon start up. and there is the camera:

I also painted my spoiler. before/after:

Upon opening the kick panel I discovers two unplugged wires staring right at me: can anyone advise what these are for? and why I am missing whatever they plug into?

Power mirror plug (used only on trucks with manual windows) and probably the rear diff lock plug. The dash harness is common between many trims and options, so you will find a fair amount of extra plugs under the dash...

(my 2WD had the plugs for all 4WD stuff on the dash harness, for example)

finally have my grill ready for paint, just need it to warm up a bit, too cold to paint sadly.

going with a ghost "TOYOTA" in the mesh. something noticeable only if you are paying attension

I JB-welded the letters with a toothpick, worked perfectly to get it in the corners.

SeaFoam Spray

Attempted to do the simplest seafoaming process of all time and just quite -didnt trust the "straw-bender" enough. ended up spraying the majority down the intake tube into the filter housing instead of into the throttle body...damn. some went in, got a bit of white smoke but ill have to do it again some other time. its too dam cold to stand outside.

on the plus side, I was able to install my new AMERICA steering knob, turning has never been so easy

Pick'n Pull Christmas!

oh boy am I excited! got some great stuff at the pick'n pull yards today, ended up going to 3 different ones all within 1/4 mile of each other and boy was it worth it!

both front skid plates (anyone know the hardware size for mounting this???)
late model center console, parking brake handle, and mounting bracket (because why not avoid drilling holes!! :biggrin2:)
OEM rear window wiper blade
OEM low pressure cap for my A/C system that was missing
battery hold down (mine was missing and the previous owner used a shoelace....)
2 more grab handles (because grab handles, thats why!)
2 complete sets of OEM rear hatch struts. one set actually pushes the door up for you all the way !!! (picked up the second set for anyone who needs some. just cover the shipping. they work well)

all of this for a grand total of $80

also found a Limited model with the rear axle, diff, and locker all still attached, the yard would remove it for $250. they wont let you do it yourself.

Better take off your intake tube to inspect. The baffles will be full of Seafoam. Don't risk hydrolocking.

Same thing happened to me with the shitty spray can.

Make sure the gear ratio matches your front diff... (or go back and get the matching front diff)

-Charlie

the only problem is, this axle was already pulled from a 4runner. that 4runner is no longer at the yard, they crushed it last weekend. ill have to dig into it and find what gearing it has. (How do i do that?)

also, every 4runner i looked at had the front diff gone already. :crybaby:

been driving around all day today and yesterday, no issue. but that's a good point. ill have to take a look if i get some downtime. thanks!

(20 spins of one side, other side held still, count pinion spins, divide by 10 = ratio) The large number of spins help you tell the difference between a 4.10 and a 4.30 ratio.

-Charlie

will definitely do the 20 turns to confirm

"...Off-road enthusiasts will find improved low-traction performance available through a locking rear differential, optional on all four-wheel drive models (except SR5 models equipped with automatic transmission). Sporting a 4.3:1 differential gear ratio, this feature locks the rear wheels together while in low-4WD, forcing both wheels to turn together...." - found here

Steering

attempted to install my new inner tie rods but I do not have anything that will fit the rack, or the rod. no shops around here have a 27mm and a 32mm wrench for sale, or rent. sadly I had to order them online. they will get here tomorrow. hopefully they arrive early enough so I can get an alignment done tomorrow and be ready for a road trip to Austin this weekend!!

on the plus side, I did install the new steering rack guide. before there was a little wobble in the rack, but now it feels solid as a rock!

EDIT: managed to install my inner and outer tie rods this morning, and new brake lines, and got an alignment! feels good.

finaly had good weather to paint my grill. I'm a little bummed the "TOYOTA" is difficult to see. I wanted it to be tough, but this may be a bit to tough haha.

the thought occurred to stencil the letters and then spray them with a light dusting of grey primer.

EDIT: AAAAAANNNNNDDDD painted. need to do some minor touch up with some plack paint and a small brush but overall I am pleased.

any one have a tip on adjusting the front bumper to close that gap just under the grill?
