The ugly duckling 5th gen 4r.

I have to admit, it took a while for the 5th gen 4runners looks grow on me enough to purchase one. I was very close to going w/ the Tahoe LT with the Kia Grand Cherokee in a distant 3rd, but I'm so glad I didn't. This may be a bit weird, but, part of the reason I like my 4runner so much is that it's not an aesthetically pretty vehicle. I like that there aren't tons of the female persuasion that want to rock this rig. Dumb? I don't care, I know someone else has to be thinking the same damn thing.

Oh yeah, the 4runner has been nothing but stellar going up to the mountain this winter for snowboarding. Haven't had a chance to do too much else yet but can't wait to get this thing off-road this summer.......And can't wait to get rid of the factory 20 inch rims.

Looks are subjective. I really didn't like the 4th Gen style and I think the 5th returns some of the symmetry back to the classic lineage of 4Rs.
 
In the New England area, most of the individuals I notice driving the 5th gen 4Runner are women. I'm beginning to notice more and more of the 5th gens on the road. I really liked the looks of the 5th gen right off the bat. I felt it looked like it meant business. And with tasteful mods, I don't think anything comes close in the aesthetics. Just looks sick!

Regardless of whether one likes the looks of the 5th gen or not, they are a very distinctive vehicle on the road that you can pick out from the crowd. That is getting harder and harder to do now days with many vehicles. When I first moved To Colorado in late 2010, there were very few 5th gens on the road. I stuck out. Now they are pretty plentiful. However, they still stand out when I'm driving down the street. And, I like that!
 
Every trail i see around here is driven by a woman... does that make you feel like less of a man, because they have good taste?
 
It took until this year for the looks to win me over, I'm glad I made the purchase. I also like the fact people ask me "what kind of truck is that?"
 
When they first hit the market the first one I saw on the road was driven by a woman.

Lots of 'em drive full size pickup trucks around my area as well...

I was immediately struck by the looks of the 5th Gen. I always thought that the 3rd gen 4Runner and the last Gen Sequoia were the best looking trucks on the market and the 5th gen was like a caricature of that in a cool way and I love it.
 
The 5th gen looks puffed up in some ways to me - I hate to say it and potentially offend anyone, but the general design standard of today's vehicles bothers me... And the 5th gen has too much plastics and the design just doesn't sit right with me. Though it has grown on me some since it came out, I would sooner buy a 4th gen, they are a lot better, in my opinion.

Each to their own... My heart rests with the 3rd gens... :)
 
My salesman said that trail editions are about 4% of annual 4Runner production. Any accuracy in that statement? They are certainly the minority...

Same feeling here. I had a 3rd gen and hated the look of the 4th (but loved the LED tails, etc. etc.). When I saw the 5th gens, I had to get one! I thought they were going to keep them looking like the 4th gens, but I think the 5th is so much like the 3rd style at the front.

I don't care whether guys or girls drive them, whoever it is made the right decision! :lookout:
 
I get compliments all the time on mine and even some questions "what is that?" I remember the first 5th gen I saw, a black LE and I was in love. Ended up with my TE two years later.

I wasn't sold on the 5th gen at all, especially the interior. But a deal come up that was too good to turn down. I've since grown to love her and actually prefer the exterior to the 4th gens I was looking at before but the interiors were much nicer. I'm also glad I managed a 2010 so I could get leather and no stupid third row. Why the trail doesn't offer nav and leather is beyond me. If anything, it'd be nice to personalize these more from the factory.

Putting a limited interior inside my SR5 would be wonderful but I can only imagine the cost and work involved :(

The 3rd gen limited in silver is still my favorite 4R...the interior is way too dated now unfortunately.

I sure hope the 4r dosen't become the next Subaru Outback. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Most the women I know and see w/ SUV's rock X3's/5's, RX330's, Q5's etc. Could just be that I live around a different socio-economic demographic, because the 4R is on the lower end around here anyway so you don't see a whole heck of a lot em around.......Guess that's why I thought it was a manly truck, you just crushed my hopes and dreams, time to trade in for a Kenworth T800 for the new daily driver I suppose. :rockon:

is Nav not an option for the TE in Canada? mine has Nav w/JBL.
 
No JBL in Canadian Trails - and they do all get KDSS. I think the 13s have entune now, with some kind of Nav. MSRP of 45k too!
