I’ll be in Bishop this Wednesday 8/1 around lunch time. I have a handheld Baofeng with a battery eliminator if you want a loaner.

That is a really great offer. Thank you for it. I was just looking at a similar unit on Amazon. I'll end up just buying one after a bit more research. Then maybe I'll even get a license. lol

I would be pissed about the Kings too. I would hit up King and see if they happen to give a shit that you're trying to get them before a big wheeling event, and that the 8-9 week lead time you've currently been given is pretty crazy for an off-the-shelf shock! Maybe that doesn't matter, because maybe even the "off-the-shelf" shocks are still made to order. 8-9 weeks just seems more like a custom shock lead time. Maybe 4-Ripcord could help us understand the situation better. I have no grasp on how huge or small Kings' shop really is. Maybe it's smaller than I've assumed it is.

Part of the delay is that my rears are custom length. After talking with Filthy I was still told 5-6 weeks lead time. I thought about sending 4-Ripcord a PM but maybe he'll chime in here. I haven't emailed Filthy back yet as I'm waiting to cool off a bit. lol

I blew apart my poly steering rack bushing wheeling last year. I've since replaced them with rubber.

Well you should definitely have a HAM any time you wheel. Whether it’s alone or in a group. I’m only running a cheap Baofeng handheld but I am strongly considering a higher end HAM radio. I’ll bring my dads radio if you don’t want to buy one before the trip. You can pick up a basic Baofeng for $25-$35 then a better antenna for another $15 and have a pretty good setup for a basic handheld.

Major bummer about the shocks being a huge delay. That has been a major issue with King for the past few years now. If it were me, I’d cancel the order and either go with another brand with better lead times such as Fox or ADS, or wait a little and go outboard with some 12” shocks.

I'm still thinking it over. ADS was the other company on my list. They still don't have a rear shock for 3rd gens out though. Maybe go outboard with ADS all the way around. I really like King but this is not what I signed on for.

King always has ridiculously long lead times, welcome to the fun...

Thanks for assuring me it's normal. Let the fun continue. Or cancel. lol

Hope things are well back in CO for you.

Good news.

Took the rig out for about 1/2 mile of lo/lo fun. It performed great. On one down hill I did have the stock shifter pop into neutral so I might have to go to the HD springs. Other then that it ran perfectly.

Lo/lo is such an incredible thing. I've always thought lockers where the best hard wheeling asset you could get. Now I'm not so sure. I went up a local hill that's just a total rutted out steep nightmare. It's a spot I use to test things often. I've never made it up with open diffs in stock low. I have made it up with the rear locked but it wasn't what I would call easy.

I decided to give it a go in lo/lo open/open. I made it up. There's was a few moments where steering corrections where needed to keep the tires on there contact patch. Going that slow it's very easy to correct. I spun a lot but still made it up. lol

Then I went with lo/lo rear locked. That went very smooth and I didn't really have to correct my line much. I few spins but I made it with no stress.

Then it was lo/lo locked/locked. All I can say is, Holy shit. I pointed my rig at the deepest ruts and took them head on with no angle. That's not at all how you should approach ruts but I wanted to really test my rig. It made it without an issue. I was so impressed I broke down and cried. JK!

So the duals work and I finally have my rig where I want it. Let the wheeling and fun begin.

Bad news:

On the way over my stereo system didn't sound quite right. I could tell my sub was dead and the speakers sounded weaker then usual.

I got home and confirmed my subs not working. My passenger front and driver rear also are dead. I pulled my driver seat so I could check the 4ch amp. It's working fine. Then I pulled the head unit out. I was able to swap RCA cables to verify all speakers are working.

I pulled out the trusty multi meter and got some readings from the sub out and F/R pre-outs. The sub outs read .002v. The two non working speaker pre-outs read .002v. The working speaker pre-outs read 2.12v at peak. Yep, stereos toast. That's a bummer.

Good news:

I'm getting a new head unit!

Good News
I'm an Idiot

I can't remember the last time I've been this stoked for being stupid. For the past 2 hours the whole stereo thing has been bothering me. I did the install. It should work. I had to be missing something. I had to be.

So I went back into the garage to double check. When I did the first diag I used my DAP as source. I also used a 3.5 cable that I had laying around. After I finished I put my DAP on the charger. When I went for the second round I just put the stereo to FM. WTF? All 4 door speakers are working.

I grabbed another 3.5 to 3.5 and plugged my DAP in. All door speakers where still working. It was that damn cable.

One thing you always do when trouble shooting car audio is use a tone gen CD. It puts out a constant hertz. I skipped that step because I couldn't find my tone gen CD and I figured my DAP would be just fine. It was but the 3.5 cable wasn't. That's why the RCA outs didn't get voltage. No source, no volts.

That left me looking at the sub. It still wasn't working. Not only was it not working it wasn't even hissing. Nada. I've had my truck half gutted to do the duals. It was working fine before. I wonder what happened?

I traced the amp trigger wire back to the head unit. Guess what had pulled out? Yep. The rear mono block trigger wire pulled from the head unit connection. The 4ch under my seat was still attached which is why I didn't check that earlier. Guess who's sub goes to 11 again?

So, two simple things almost caused me to order a whole new head unit. If I hadn't double checked I would have installed that unit and had the same exact problem. Like I said at the top, I'm an idiot. Luckily one that is only an idiot for brief moments. I'm sure some of you guys can relate. lol

Wheeler Ridge The Slow Way
4S5A to 30E302 to 30E301

Today was crawlbox test day. The real test day. The long hard lots of rocks test day.

I choose to head up what many think is the most difficult trail in Bishop. There wrong but it's still plenty hard. I've run this trail twice. Once with open diffs and once after I got locked. I know it pretty well and it's never an easy day.

You pick up 4S5A out of Swall Meadows off of Sky Meadow Rd. After about a mile of easy dirt you hook a left onto 30E302. Then it's another 7 miles or so of easy to moderate wheeling to pick up 30E301. Then it''s 3 miles of game on.

After you get up 30E301 you drop back to the front side of the Wheeler Crest. The whole of the Owens Valley is spread out before you from your 11,000' perch.

The road continues for another 2 miles to an old mine site. If you choose to take that please be careful. It's a loose sandy off camber narrow shelf road that is signed warning against vehicle traffic. At least one person I know of has died from rolling off it. With that said drive smart and it's a cool albeit scary section.

The route follows the valley at lower right before turning hard left on the back side of Wheeler Crest. You eventually come out on the upper left side of this photo.

Got rocks?

One of the easier sections to navigate.

This is on the way to the mine. Lots of smoke from numerous fires across Cali.

That's all for the photo's . I'll let you guys get a look for yourselves instead of spoiling it.

Now onto the dual case performance.

First thing I need to do is get a proper oil slinger for the crawlbox shifter. At my first stop I noticed some gear oil on my skid. After I quick check I verified all seals where good and it was coming from the crawlbox shifter. They vent through the shifter and there's an oil slinger you can put in to prevent the oil from venting as well. I didn't order one so I get to pull the center console again.

I was in low for at least 6 miles and in lo/lo for about a mile. Both shifters stayed put and never popped out. Maybe they just needed time to break in. There was no noise or banging from the duals. All in all they worked great.

Now, if you haven't wheeled with duals I'll let you in on a little secret. It's cheating. It's also a game changer like everyone who runs them will tell you. Let me explain.

If you wheel a lot you understand that picking a line and keeping contact patch is what separates a success from a failure. I've run this stretch enough to know the lines. With open/open it would take multiple attempts to get it perfect. When I got locked it still took at least two tries to find that perfect line.

With the duals in lo/lo and the rear locked I walked up the hard sections. I never once had to readjust my rig . It all goes so slow with so much torque you can correct as you go.

At one point I picked a pure shit line just for fun. The rig hit two large steps placed a perfect distance apart. The front was at the step just as the rear was at another step. For a second my rig slowly spun the rears. I hit the front locker and was up and over with zero corrections. Like I said, game changer(or cheating?).

To say I'm happy that I dual cased my rig would be an understatement. I just hope they last so I can continue to play the game.

I am glad that the juice was worth the squeeze man. I know it killed you to have to wait on this part and that part, and THAT's not the RIGHT PART... But, now you have one of the most capable versions of a 3rd gen out there. I think it is perfect for what you do and you'll get a hell of a lot of enjoyment out of putting that thing through its paces.

Thanks.

So that stretch I did today is usually mild white knuckle territory. With the duals I not only was smiling but I was relaxed. The amount of control they give is truly amazing.

BTW, sorry about post jumping in between your photo's in your thread. I had no idea more where inbound. lol

Haha.. no worries. I post mainly on my phone as that, is where the photos are. It is a pain in the ass that takes a bit of time. So the interesting photos are usually near the end.

I am sure that the new capabilities will take you further than most. It sounds like new paths of opportunity have opened up and begging for some trip reports. Good luck and be safe out there. I think the dual cases allow you the time to get a good read on what is working though. So there must be less of the typical "Send it! / Here goes nothing!" moments. LOL. That white Taco Marlin Crawler video of him setting his Taco up the hill and getting out using open / open is crazy. Very impressive.

Thanks.

Duals make me smile even just going back and forth in the driveway...

I couldn't agree more! I especially like to drop into low/low when in stop and go traffic while picking my kids up from school. hehe. or really anytime I can find an excuse.

Yep. There so slow. It's awesome. I've always been a hyper active can't sit still drive fast and live on the edge type. I've been trying to curb that for years. The duals are helping me relax. When I first engaged them my first thought was "This is gonna take forever". After wheeling them I completely enjoy going slow, which is a strange feeling for me. lol

Don't stop in for a while and this is what I come back to. Damn! Nice work.

Thanks. I tend to think things through for a while before I commit. Once I commit though it's a full commitment. No looking back.

You don't need an excuse. All your doing is using the gear set to keep it properly lubed. lol

Silver Canyon(6S02) to 4S01 to 5S01 to Cottonwood Creek(35E315)

High up in the White Mountains NE of Bishop CA lies a special place. I didn't realize how special until last night when my wife asked if we could go check out an area called Granite Meadow. There's a total of about 5 roads I haven't traveled in the Whites. Granite Meadows happens to be very close to one of them. It also happens to have the North Fork of Cottonwood Creek running through it.

I couldn't pinpoint it but the North Fork was already in my brain. I knew I've heard of it before. Since I fish a lot I figured it was fishing related. The Whites is not known for fishing. There's only a few year round water sources in the whole range. Why did the North Fork stick out to me?

I did a quick google search and it became clear. It's an RNA. For those that don't know that stands for Research Natural Area. It's land set aside by the feds for scientific research. There's always something endangered in RNA's and I quickly realized it was a trout. Not just any trout but the Piaute Cutthroat Trout. There are only 5 self-sustaining populations in the US. and it's on the endangered species list. Looks like I wouldn't be going fishing after all.

Here's the trout in question. I did get to see a few but they where way to fast for me to capture on camera. Luckily that photo above was taken by a researcher who's way more patient then I.

Here's something you don't see everyday in the Whites. Bighorn at the start of Silver Canyon:

I'll skip the top of the Whites since it's already well documented in this thread. Here's where the fun begins. 35E315

Granite Meadow in the distance:

The road follows a drainage for almost the whole way. It's a bit tight but doable:

You get a lot of this:

pfms6Qlh.jpg

About a mile after that shot the road was washed out to the point of impassable even by me. We got out and hoofed it. While hoofing it my phone was in the truck. lol

Granite Meadows itself was pretty cool. Lots and lots of rock. Most of it total shit granite but there where a few climbable things.

If your looking for an off the beaten path place to check out this one is worthy. Great views, shitty road, and an endangered species. Put it on the list.

So some of you guys might remember that I'm a "budget" audiophile. I like tunes, I like them loud and I like them clear. My system has always been able to do all three.

Then I threw these dual cases in and shit went south. Picture hearing your engine revs through your stereo. Yeah, I was a we bit pissed. WTF had changed? I'd had the dash apart to do the shifter work, I had the seats out, I had the carpet pulled back. Basically I had the whole front interior of my rig ripped wide open.

I never touched the stereo wiring though. Odd. A system that was damn near perfect went to crap. I tried all the usual tricks to get rid of the whine. Some helped, some just pissed me off more.

Usually this type of interference can be traced to the RCA cables. It's also usually the ground on the shield that's causing it. I did the old school wrap the cables and ground them to the radio trick and it sounded OK. For an audiophile "OK" isn't even frikkin close to OK.

I researched ferrrite chokes a bit. Then I decided to get some and upgrade mt RCA cables to dual shielded. After 30 minutes of choking even my old cables where producing real quality sound. Since I already purchased the dual shielded cables I wnet ahead and installed them as well.

I'm positive it was the ferrite chokes that got rid of all the interference. I'm also stoked to have new RCA cables.

Here's the main choke:

Here's those bad ass new cables:

So this might leave some of you asking how adding dual cases gave me some crap audio If I ever figure out that answer I'll post it. I really have no clue why the system changed. I only know that I can go to 11 again. lol

I love it. I need to get a decent sound setup in my rig. Being able to have loud, clear, and full music makes every drive so much more enjoyable. I'd love to pick your brain about it.

Anytime man. Let's keep it in here instead of PM's so others can benefit from it as well.

The hardest part of any system is getting the correct sound stage. I highly recommend a 4 channel amp with hi and lo pass filters for both the front and rear channels. I picked up a 1000W Hifonics Zeus for that. It's a quality amp that doesn't break the bank.

Having the fronts hi passed and the rears low passed you get a real good sound stage in our rigs. Add in a sub in the rear and it comes together very well. You could easily blow 2000 grand and up if you want. My system was about 700 or so. Does it sound as good as a 2000 buck system? No, but it's pretty damn close. That extra 1300 bucks I saved went into a dual case. lol

As you guys know I've vented quite a bit about my King purchase. I have emailed back and forth with Filthy about it. They still said King wouldn't have my shocks to me till 8/24 or so. Then these show up today. I don't know how the **** it happened but I'm gonna send Filthy a thank you email now. lol
