Things you did not know about your 4runner

If you leave the map light on and go on vacation to Hawaii for a week your 4Runner will not start when you get back.

I left mine on in the garage in my 13LE and it turns off automatically FYI, at least the front map light.

I've found my map light on the next morning on a few occasions (after the wife drives it) Starts up fine, but I did replace it with LEDs. I'm amazed it doesn't turn off automatically. It looks like the limited does, but sr5 and trail doesn't. Most cars I've owned made in the 2000's even late 90's have an auto shut off.

I had a 2001 grande cherokee AND learned my lesson (4runners since)and even the old jeep would shut things off. Generally because most things in my jeep wouldn't work for more than a few hours without visiting the dealership...but it did shut off lights that would come back on sometimes when I wanted them to.

Fog Lights

Noticed little round white lights up front, could not find a switch to turn them on. Guessed they are fog lights. Finally looked at the manual and found a rotary switch on the regular light switch stick. I know ------ :rtfm:

The panic feature with the brakes if you need to stop suddenly. I had read a bunch of safety features on the window sticker about braking... I never really paid much attention until I had to do a panic stop on a two lane blacktop road on vacation last summer. The panic break feature or whatever it is called saved my rear.

Funny thing is I had research the two different 4WD drive systems, the BOF platform, and engine but could honestly care less about the brakes... That was until I needed them!

I just stumbled upon this tonight. My dash lighting adjustment dial has always been set to the max position. It "clicks" in to this position. As I was driving and using the navigation tonight, I decided to try dialing back the brightness of the dash lighting. When I backed the dial out of the max position, the navigation system immediately went to a night-time mode wherein the map background was black. Prior to this, in the max brightness position, the navigation map remained in a day-time mode with a white background. Interesting...

ah ha! That's why my nav is always bright as hell as night! I switched to day/night mode but I couldn't figure out why it never actually would switch over.

You can plug in a USB stick (as high as 128gb) and play a maximum of 10000 songs off the device all sorted per artist album and genre. If you hit the album art on the screen while playing a song it will bring up the other songs in that album. Also hold to mute doesn't just stop the radio but it also serves as a pause/play button in other music modes.

To my best understanding, it's not suppose to work, in the US at least. I mean heavens forbid someone were to get something caught in the window while you remotely closed it. Unfortunately for us, we have to use our physical key in the key hole to close all the windows. Thank our peers who like to sue at the drop of a hat, lol. hwell:

The feature can be programmed to work in other countries, like Japan I think, not sure about elsewhere.

I would think the auto stop and go back down feature would still work in this case.

Unfortunately I don't have remote start or anything reprogrammed from the dealer. Was really hoping for remote start too after reading this thread.

ah ha! That's why my nav is always bright as hell as night! I switched to day/night mode but I couldn't figure out why it never actually would switch over.

That whole thing drove me nuts for the longest. I had to just keep it in max mode (unless specifically driving at night) because every time I would go under a bridge during the day the head unit and dash would freak out on me. I like consistency with my lighting.

The compass was set to zone 10 the whole year I've owned it.

Dealer didn't know what zone we are in (5/6) and didn't know how to change it (hold down mode).

Mine is almost 4 years old and probably still set to zone 10 or whatever. I didn't know the compass was by zone, but it's usually accurate even though the dot that shows it needs to be calibrated has been on ever since I bought it.

To keep my accessories on; like radio and phone if using- I'll shut off my 4runner in Drive- move indicator to Park and accessories stay on. When I want to restart, just hit the start button twice with foot on the brake and restarts.

Is there a better way?

One thing I would add that has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum but not here, is that Kleenex Junior boxes will fit perfectly in the brackets on the door of your centre console.

So just got a pro last week and I read there is a storage compartment behind the 2nd row seats. There was also pics of this in this thread a few pages back. However I went to check mine and saw no such compartment. Can anyone confirm if the pros have this compartment? It would be where there's an angle piece on the floor next to your back seat where the tie down anchors are. Unless I'm completely blind I really don't think I have one which stinks.

Pretty sure I read that option only was with the slide out cargo option...
