Think I just lost my motor. 280k miles.

That’s quite a way to start a Monday. Sorry to hear that, PM me if you need any help with anything. I’m going to pick up a parts truck with only 168k on the motor if you need a close low mileage donor.

Can you just check the fuel pressure on the rail instead of removing the pump? If the pressure is out of spec, then you know the pump has shit the bed.

Hopefully it's just your pump otherwise....2JZ??

Problem with this is it’s a bit tricky to check fuel pressure on these as Toyota didn’t give us a service port on the rail. You’d have to get a special banjo fitting and T directly to the supply line before the rail.

I was able to isolate my fuel pump as having failed recently by having the wife crank the truck while I was underneath banging on the fuel tank with a dead blow hammer. Only then did my engine turn over but died again a few minutes later.

I believe my wiring might have disconnected or something. I did bang on it. The pump I installed only had 50k miles on it. I guess it could have failed.

I do have a pressure tester. Im going to pull the fuel line and check to see if I have any fuel flow at all.

If it was not snowing I would most likely do it tonight but I will have to wait till tomorrow.

JayRolla -

As other posters have stated, definitely don't overlook the fuel pump.

Mine died on me in the middle of a drive-thru a couple months ago. After cranking and cranking and cranking, I got it started for about 5 seconds. Even when it got going, it was clear that it had a problem. It kinda "chugged" and sounded like it was gasping for air and had a knock similar to what you're describing and then it died once and for all. I was prepared for the worst based on the sounds coming out.

New fuel pump made it good as new. I'm pretty ignorant on all this stuff so I could be totally off but it sounds like a fuel issue to me based on my extremely limited knowledge.

Best of luck!

Ditto Jay. Were you able to get a fuel pressure reading? The banjo adapter is about $10.

I did it the ghetto way. Just pulled fuel line to see if it was pumping. So this week I verified fuel at the rail, verified spark at the plugs, timing belt not broke, no cels but still no start.

I let the truck sit 2 days with no battery. I went out and hooked battery up.

TRUCK FREAKIN STARTED RIGHT UP!!!!! NO KNOCK, NO SMOKE, NO CEL. RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP!!!!!

NOW I'M SCARED. LOL.

Okay so another observation. When I went to check fuel at rail I added 1gal gas because I was at 1/8th tank to make sure I was not out of gas. I then proceeded to try and start with no luck. I then verified pump was pumping.

Today when it started it shows I have 1/4 tank but gas light is still on. No way I have that much gas.

Maybe I was just out of fuel and after checking fuel didn't crank enough to get fuel flowing and start up.

I feel like a dumbass if this is the case. I'm not afraid to admit it. Lol.

I was getting excited for a new motor and jumped to conclusions maybe. Taking her for test spin now.

Hey at least it's not a complete rebuild and it's just a, need more fuel, I know I would be super happy in that case. Glad it is so far appearing to be a simpler fix/solution :)

Yeah I'm happy. Wife is really happy since I kept taking her Tacoma. Last two times I heard that knock I lost my rebuilt talon motor due to starved rod bearing and another a crappy Corsica I never changed oil on.

I guess jumping to conclusions is never smart. Lol. Wife was like find a motor. I said not till I know for sure. She thinks 280k motor is in it's last leg. I said not for a Toyota!!

Even though there is gas being pumped, who is to say the pressure is correct. Gas pressure needs a certain psi range to operate. I'd still look hard at the pump as the culprit.

I agree. I just did pump on a Blazer and my pressure gauge hooked right up. 5psi pressure. Fuel was flowing but not enough. Pump fixed it right up.

So on my way to gas station the gas gauge went from 1/4 to completely empty. Way under e mark. That's with the gallon I added.

She took over 17 gal. Usually can only for 14-16 so I think my gauge tricked me. Also dieing on startup in driveway and knocking sound threw me off.

I think I just ran out of fuel.

Well, that's got to be a relief. I think our gas gauges being off is a pretty common thing. When mine shows empty, it only takes 14 gallons so I have a 4 gallon reserve. What's the culprit here? Is it the fuel sending unit in the tank or something else?
