Thinking about a 5th gen

As posted I'm thinking about trading my 09 tacoma for a 4Runner but I've invested so much into my taco icons,rigids,projectors, bunch of time blood and sweat etc... My dealer currently has a 2015 4Runner sr5 4wd of course and though it's very temping I just can't imagine getting rid of my icons. Question for all y'all here is has anybody tried to swap out front tacoma suspension on to a 5th gen I would only think the spring rating would be different. Also if anybody has gone from a taco to a 4Runner share your experience

Many here have gone from Taco to 4runner (me included). Your front coilovers are a direct fit, and the same part that Icon sells for the 4runner. Rear shocks may be different.

4runner is better than the taco in every way, other than having an open bed. So, the question is, how important the open bed is to you.

That's great to hear that icons are compatible as far as an open bed I have a best top that it wears all the time and I do use it as a trunk so I guess bed isn't that important. Another thing is I've notice at 33's 285/75/16 in particular aren't too popular with 5th gen from most builds I've seen, most are 17" rims is that because of clearance issues?
 
I went from a 07 taco to my 5th gen now and I don't regret it at all! DOOO ITTTTT. Also the front coilovers will fit and 16s don't clear the brake calipers from what I recall.

Correct, you cannot run a 16" rim on a 5th gen and clear the front calipers. 17s are very close.

285/70/17 is probably the most popular (non stock) tire size for lifted 4runners.
 
One thing to warn you, you will be adding 500-1000 lbs and going to a larger stock tire size, with the same transmission and final drive ratio, so it is going to feel slow compared to the Taco.
 
Understood I have 33s on my taco currently and boy it sure takes off a lot slower. Like most people I am just trying to do some "research" so I thank yall in advance. Anybody here run icons?
 
I always get confused by posts like this because an SUV and a pickup are two different animals.

Lets ask: What do YOU need? Do you need to haul stuff a lot? Did you buy your pickup because you like the way a pickup looks, or have you actually loaded the bed with drywall and 2x4's more than once?

These are questions you need to ask yourself.

If it's just fashion then an SUV is way more practical. If you actually use your pickup as a pickup, then...

Get what I am saying?

I would agree with this. It really comes down to what you are using the vehicle for. My buddy has an awesome 07 Tacoma(nice lift, rims, much bigger tires..etc). It's great for all of the things he uses it for, but the truth is that the vast majority of pickup owners are driving around with an empty bed a huge percentage of the time. Then again, I am driving around with an empty vehicle also. The difference is that I have 4 people in my vehicle many more times then my friend and he has a bunch of equipment in the bed of his Tacoma a much larger % than I do in my 4Runner. He is single, has a hunting dog, his parents own 2 separate farms and he just gets really good use of the pickup bed. I have a SO (with elderly parents), am almost always the one driving anywhere, and when I do, I have at least 2 passengers with a bunch of gear. The 4Runner is a much better choice for me and the Tacoma is a much better choice for my friend. There really is no right answer to this question, other than what are you going to get more use out of. My Runner handles better on road, but it's not an apples to apples compro (5 years newer, KDSS, much better brakes etc...), but there is no way in hell that your tossing 1K lbs of gravel in the back. The truth is pretty simple, which vehicle are you going to actually use? You will be much happier with a vehicle that you use for it's intended purpose than one that you just have because everyone else does. Simply put, they are both great vehicles, with different intended purposes....so whats your intended purpose? (and for the love of god be honest with your self when answering that question)
 
I hear where your coming from I guess most of the time my taco isn't really used as a truck but more of a car that saying just carrying passengers instead of drywall ect.. A majority of the time it would be my fishing gear I haul around. At this point it's leaning towards a 4Runner in my favor plus I can sure use some more cabin space
 
Thought I am sure it will run for 5+ years I dislike the fact that it's a prerunner I mean don't get me wrong I've been through some areas where all my buddy's are 4wd and I did just fine with proper wheel placement and feathering the throttle, I guess you could say I need 4wd for that extra assurance plus I do quite a bit of off roading. Plus the 5th gens are sexy as hell
