Those are all valid points. Android vs. Apple is like Linux vs. Mac OS, or open source vs. closed source. I don't think Android is ever going to compare to Apple in terms of seamless operation and stability. I really like my Android simply because I live on Google services (Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Maps, etc.) but the iPhone rules pretty much everywhere else.

If I didn't have such a fatty discount with Sprint, VZW would be my choice.
Sprint might get the iPhone5. More and more manufacturers are incorporating radios of various frequencies and technology to have one device to cater to the various carriers than to make separate devices for each carrier. Only time will tell.
Sprint can make the switch to LTE. There are some claims that the hardware is the same, and a software upgrade can make WiMax devices compatible with LTE. On the network side, Sprint will just need to change out the baseband cards from WiMax to LTE. Unless it's changed, but last I've read Clear Wire isn't even 100% with WiMax and they might switch to LTE. At the earliest it'll be 2013 for LTE if Sprint does make the move. That will also be the time Sprint shuts down iDEN. Clear is out of cash to expand into new markets.
If I were to take a guess, Sprint will switch to LTE. Otherwise, it'll be the lone carrier with black sheep technology. No manufacturer will waste R&D developing for a carrier with tiny market share, and no customer will sign up with a carrier that has crappy phones. Sprint's decision if it will to goto LTE will be announced around June.

Well the interesting thing is that Verizon's move to LTE will also mean a move away from CDMA. Sprint will be the only remaining major carrier on CDMA if they choose not to adopt LTE. How will they support both networks (3G/LTE)? That's one thing that I don't know anything about..the backbone infrastructure of cellular networks. And since both Verizon and AT&T will be GSM-based, will they be able to share identical phones or will the baseband chipsets need to be different to accommodate for the different spectrums?

I don't know if VZW and AT&T will be able to roam off of each other's LTE network. Currently, AT&T and T-Mobile's GSM networks operate at different frequencies and T-Mo customers can't roam on AT&T's network. When the merger is approved, eventually T-Mo customers will need to upgrade to new handsets for it to be compatible with AT&T's. AT&T will basically have a similar mess on their hands when they acquired Cingular.
As a previous poster said, AT&T's acquisition of T-Mo is to get their spectrum space.
Sprint is on WiMax because they wanted to be the first with "4G". At the time of the launch WiMax was the only technology available. LTE wasn't finalized for Sprint's rollout timeline. One of the chances that may or may not pay off to be first.

I'm currently using an aging iPhone 3G. It has a few problems from time to time with apps. And I don't think I could live without the system (System Activity Monitor) app to shutdown still running apps to free up some memory.
Have never been an Apple guy, but had a smartphone before the 3G, and the iPhone blows it away.
It's about time for me to leave AT&T for Verizon. Should I get the 4 or wait for the 5?

Definitely wait. I would also look at other phones. There are many competitive phones out there.
From what I've heard the iPhone 5 may not be a new phone, but more along the lines of an upgraded iPhone 4.
Not excited at the data limits. Good thing I have unlimited.

One advantage of AT&T is simultaneous voice and data. That can be done on Sprint while using data on 4G/WiMax and I believe the same on VZW while in LTE coverage.
Rumors say the September announcement might be the iPhone 4S. iPhone 5 not launching until next year. Either way the next iteration of the iPhone needs to be LTE if it's for VZW. Otherwise, there's a lot of better alternatives.
I am not a iPhone/iOS fan. iOS devices (iPhone original, 3G, 3GS, 4 along with iPad and iPad2) was heavily used at my last company and I supported them day in and day out to know it doesn't cut it for me.
I like Android in some ways, but it has a long ways to go before it can compete with iOS. Especially for the average user. I want it to do good, though. Competition is a good thing. I wish RIM would realize it's not the 90s anymore and they can't ride BES's coattails any longer.

i hate apple for thier iron grip on every aspect of thier product, sure it's fine for idiot soccer moms and the like, but if you know what your doing with your device you shouldn't be stoped from using it how you see fit, i hate verizon for this as well, the most locked down network of them all, so being on an iphone with verizon would be torture to me...it has to be driod for me, driod will play any file i throw at it without much of a fit and is vastly more customizable then the icrap products. i had an ipad for a few weeks and took it back becuase in order to use any of my media i had to root it and use 3rd party apps, which were nowhere near as polished and smooth as the stock apps, thus loosing all of the appeal of the highest priced tablet on the market, i mean isn't that why you pay for the apple brand or is it because you want your starbucks drinking hipster freinds to think your cool? i'd be all over apple if all of the accessories weren't propitery,98% of files weren't drm'd, and they just bit the bullet and got on board the flash train, html5 is still a ways out...steve jobs is a joke....
now for verizon, i don't use my phone to talk, talking on your phone for long periods of time is for wimpy men and little girls, no real man talks on the phone for more then 30 seconds at a time unless your talking a one of the previously mentioned groups,

i joined verizon smartphone community becuase of the data plan, sure they aren't as fast as some of the other carriers but had the largest coverage area and best data pricing.

i'm bailing on verizon as soon as it's time for me to upgrade, the new data plan is crap ,going from $30 unlimited to $30 2 gig is very very very expensive for the amount of data you get , i'm willing to pay $50-60 a month for unlimited data no-cap just for peice of mind in knowing that i'm not going to get charged overages on the odd month that i may go over my tired data allowance, that and who the heck want's 4g lte and a meager 2 gig limit? 1 full size hd movie will run you well over that, what's the point of having a dual core,hd capable phone if it's crippled by the frigging network? sprint and virgin both still have unlimited data, i will be moving to them soon enough, like i said i'm willing to pay a bit more for my unlimited data but having no limit to what i can be charged in the year 2011 makes me sick, heck even keep the rates the same with the $30 unlimited and start throttling the data after 2-3 gigs like other carriers, 10gigs for $100 is b.s. plus $10 a gig after that, complete b.s., that said why is verizon the only who doesn't use sim cards? another thing that pisses me off, my driodx is now a paper weight if i decide to change carriers and can't use it at all when i travel, unlike any other carrier i can just get where i'm going and swap in a new sim card for that country and be good to go.
it maybe a year or 2 but mark my words here and now verizon will go back to a unlimited data plan eventually, the lte network is useless without it and plenty of people are going to be complaining about hidden things on thier bills once it really gets going, i'd also like to point out the unlimited data is what brought most of the smart hpone users to verizon in the first place at&t/sprint had the iphone and faster networks but verizon had coverage and unlimited data, i can see alot of people jumping ship very soon as well, just read the driod forums, alot of unhappy power users out there....

Sprint does not use sim cards....
Call me an idiot soccer mom then because i junked Android smartphone after 3 months of frustrating "no fu*king app for anything i need" months! Oh yeah, love the constant crashes (always when you're doing something important or showing off your phone!) and "pull-that-battery-out" reboot routine! Now, i know why Android phones have removable battery!! It ain't so that you can replace it when it is old, but to reboot the damn thing everytime it crashes...and that is way more often than any Apple product i know. (And who the hell would keep a smartphone past 2 years anyways to need a new battery for this "feature" to be semi-useful?!)
Oh yeah, did i forget to say that BT Audio streaming is crappy on Android?

I just don't understand that opinion of "Apple is for idiots". I am an IT pro. I work with Windows and Linux servers everyday, networking equipment, virtualization, whatever. I do it all. And I do it all from a Macbook Pro. I've been running a Mac full time now for over 2 years and have never had a moment where I thought "I wish I had Windows so I could do what I want with it." I adore my Mac because it does everything I want it to do without getting in my way AND it's gorgeous while it does it.
I also recently made the switch from a Droid to an iPhone 4 on Verizon. I got all into Android rooting and some light development, and it was fun for awhile. But eventually the lack of stability, the constant re-flashing to find a full-featured ROM, the fragmentation of releases among Android devices, and the absolutely awful battery life left me pretty disgusted with Android. Consider this: at this very moment there are a few devices running the most recent release of Android, and of those few devices there are even fewer who can run apps like Hulu Plus or Netflix, etc. I consider that to be a major problem, as someone may go out and buy an Android phone expecting to have feature X (which, in many cases is a software feature), but they don't find it. This is not a problem with the iPhone. Sure, you could argue that the 3G isn't going to support iOS 5, but that's to be expected. Hardware manufacturers AND carriers are currently releasing brand new phones that are either incapable of or disallowed from running the most recent version of Android. That's unacceptable.
On top of those two devices, I also recently bought an iPad 2 after the iOS5 announcement. When you talk about media, I suppose that is somewhat a valid point, but keep in mind that VLC was allowed on the App Store by Apple and then removed by one of the VLC devs because of some bogus "stick it to the man" GPL licensing complaints. Apple may not NATIVELY support many formats, but third-party app devs do. And again, this is something easily solved. Just convert your media to an iPad friendly format (the x.264 codec is VERY good for high compression/high quality) and watch it natively.
On the subject of having to jailbreak an iOS device to get necessary functionality: is that not the same case with an Android device? Android is just as closed without root as iOS is without being jailbroken. And the bad thing is Android is getting even more closed, although I applaud HTC for promising to release their phones with unlocked bootloaders. I'm sure Mein Fuhrer Verizon will slam down on that with an iron fist, though.
Long story short: I am well beyond "idiot soccer mom status" and it's the simplicity of iOS that is attractive to me. Having things work like they should, and for longer than 6 hours at a time, is really the largest selling point to me and it's something that Android can't offer right now.
