Thinking about a new cell phone? Thinking of Verizon??

Sprint is getting Iphone 4S in Sept or October according to rumors...so, with Sprint you get Iphone PLUS unlimited data plans!! If true, then i am definitely not switching to Verizon...Sprint baby!! :trophy: And since i am a "Premier" customer with Sprint, i get to upgrade my phone ANNUALLY! So, new Iphone every year for me!

i had the option to upgrade to either an iphone 3 or droid 3 with verizon.

i went with the droid 3. no regrets yet. my sister has an iphone and i fiddled with hers but i like droid technology more. :guitar3:

The second Verizon started carrying the Iphone, it was the Iphone 4, not the 3, so are you meaning to say you preferred the Droid 3 over the Iphone4?

At&t still carried the Iphone 3 after Verizon started carrying the Iphone 4, and I thought I remember them advertising it for $50 with a 2 year agreement (for the smaller GB model, I think 8GB?). Just curious.

Yeah you can still get the iPhone 3 for 50 bucks. Don't go Verizon though. You can't browse the web and still be on the phone on their network. I get great reception with my iPhone 4 through AT&T

Within a year, as 4G network towers become more plentiful and Iphone become 4G-compatible, this will be a non-issue. But, yeah, in the meantime, ATT is the only way to go if this is a must-have feature. However, even when i had my Android phone, i never had a moment where i was talking AND surfing at the same time. How hard is it just to hang up and surf...then call back?? And how often does that scenario play out?

It's now 5 years old (last time I signed a contract was 5 years ago) and has stopped working. I'm debating whether or not I should get a smart phone. Here are a few reasons I think I shouldn't, the phone costs more, the monthly bill will be twice what my current bill is (I'm on the cheapest voice plan), I'm not on facebook or twitter so I don't have to be connected to the Internet at all times to see what everyone is doing. I also only use my work email for work purposes so I don't want to check it while I'm not at work.

On the flip side smart phones are cool, I know there are tons of useful apps, and I've been told that yes you can live without a smartphone/data plan but once you get one you'll start using it more and more. It seems most people on this thread have smartphones, what do you use most or like most about smartphones that made you get it?

Used to work for a logistics company and I traveled a lot. So when I was on the line with a customer I was able to still retrieve attachments they were sending through email and talk still. Also I needed to access our server using remote connection. Used it daily

Bought and paid for by my fathers company, but I would never have another phone than this iPhone 4. I have had 2 droids and several blackberrys. The endless amount of apps is a huge plus. it's nice to put movies on here then hook it up to my tv to watch. You can even rent movies on these things. I'm ex military so it is important to me to stay in touch with comrades that are throughout the world using social apps and the great email system on here. Even now I'm using an app called tapatalk to access this forum. I can upload pictures straight from my phone using this app.

as for the one who is debating a smart phone -

its addicting. once you get one you wont want anything else. at first i went with all touch screen, but i find that isnt for me. i have fat fingers and need a keyboard to text. so i always make sure i go with both. yes they are expensive, but i think they are worth it. i currently pay $30 a month for unlimited data. internet, games, roaming and so forth. all depends how much you plan on using it. i first got my smartphone when i moved into my own apartment. and i dont care for tv so i didnt have internet or cable. thus my phone was my connection to the world.

and yes tons of apps. the ones i use daily are:

world news / weather
google maps
craigslist app
words with friends (scrabble against other people)
police scanner
vaulty(locks your pictures)
youtube
skype
and then about 10 games.

which were all free.

^^^Same here- I have the Iphone and a lot of the Apps are free or cheap and it's pretty compact compared to most phones. I paid $2.99 for the Craigslist App, how the hell did you get it for free?

I'm a T4R.org/ Craigslist/ etc addict, so for me I can check them when I'm anywhere. I don't have home internet at the moment either, so when I'm not at work (they let me surf the net when not busy :banana I'm on my phone when at home as far as internet goes.

The big downside, as you stated, is you'll pay A LOT more a month. I have Verizon's basic plan, added 250 txt pic mssgs ($5), unlimited data ($30), and insurance($10 I think?) and after Govt taxes & all I'm paing just under $100 But on the other hand, once you get accustomed to the convenience of it all, there's no turning back! Plus you'll realize there's other stuff you can do like check weather, look for closest food places, etc. Pretty convenient.

"not to hijack the thread - but I find the battery life to be just as bad as my EVO 4G that I had (the Nexus replaced it when the power button broke off the motherboard), I don't find the "pure google" experience to be all that - in fact I find it to be less useful, at least to me. The integration (or lack thereof) with other programs is craptastic, and I'm finding, that a month into having the phone, I'm already having to do battery pulls frequently (and that sucks b/c it's in a Trident Cyclops case and isn't easy to take in and out of the case). Had an inciedent this morning of the phone restarting itself for no reason - I was reading emails and texts when I woke up, and all of a sudden it just reset itself. No reason, no clue why.

I get to hear the apple vs. droid debate everyday because people love to come in and talk shop about why whatever phone they carry is better than everything else. Here is my stance on it......

Google based phones (android for those who don't know) are awesome for customizing and being a work horse and with a little work(rooting) can be amazingly fast and can do just about anything. The biggest down side is the constant force closes, battery pulls and freezing. It just gets old, plain and simple.

I have a droid as my work phone and bought an iPhone on my personal line. The iPhone is seemless. It does what you want it to and doesn't give you trouble. Syncing with itunes is obviously easy as can be and they make a very top notch product. Their only downfall is no LTE....yet. As soon as a new iPhone comes that is LTE, its game over for pretty much everyone else.


While i'm on LTE.....no one else has it, period. Sprint uses wimax, AT&T uses HSPA+ in some areas. It isn't 4G, regardless on what the sales person told you. LTE is currently only on Verizon and others wont switch until our network is almost complete.


While sitting in Portland at a dinner with friends I demonstrated the speed test. Download was 17.5mbps and up load was 7mbps. No one comes close. And for those of us with comcast home internet, most of it is right around 12mbps.




Just thought i'd throw some info out there that I hear every day yet peole still seem to think other wise.

Sprint WiMax is equivalent to LTE. The rest is not real 4G.

Iphone 5 is supposedly coming to Sprint in mid October...same time for other carriers too. Rumor though.

Sprint wimax is no where close to LTE. THey average around 3-4mbps download. People are getting over 20mbps with LTE. That isnt equivalent to me.

Anything surrounding "iPhone 5" is rumor. The only thing Apple has said anything about is iOS5, which is a software update for current iPhone 4 users. Until Allple comes out and says there is a new phone, its a bunch of bloggers going back and forth trying to guess what will happen.

Not sure how Sprint is around you, but out here they bleed customers. THey can't add new customers fast enough to replace the ones who have left. Here is an article I fould after 10 seconds of looking on google. One poster of course had to defend sprint. I will tell you that given the perfect location where bothe Sprint and Verizon have full bars of service in Wimax and LTE, Verizon will always be faster. Its the Technology, not the carrier.

It's all up to how one wants to define "generation".

Maybe they should call it 6G. Here's how, Sprint called it 3G when it had color graphics, 2G was Wireless Web, black and white text. Then they added EV-DO (4G if you want), followed by EV-DO Rev A (5G for a numbers game). VZW prior to moving to LTE has a similar CMDA network, EV-DO and rev A network. So VZW's LTE and Sprint's WiMax are 6G networks??

Call it 4G if it gives that warm fuzzy feeling--4G is nothing more than a marketing moniker to me. The core of the matter is what the data transfer rates are. Because they could call it 40G when it hits (40mbps download speeds) for all I care. Would you call ISDN "broadband"? I don't consider the lowest DSL speed (768k or 1.5mpbs depending on area) broadband because it moves at rate of frozen dog poop. Satellite "broadband" connections in rural areas is also not broadband IMO.
