Those Of You With Field Monitor Units

I absolutely love my hilux surf field monitor unit, but there the one thing that has always bugged me about it is the two wires that are not used for the install onto a 4runner. For those of you that have installed one of these, you know what I am talking about, these 2 wires here

I have never been one to half ass something on my 4runner, and not connecting these wires to me feels like skipping an important step. Everyone says these wires do nothing to the function of the monitor, but if that were true Toyota would never have included them. There is a member on Yotatech who is currently in New Zeland, and he is at junkyards and is getting some hilux stuff to take back to the states. I'm hoping he will trace these mystery wires to find their origin.

My monitor does have a little bug in it. When I push the tilt up button for my sunroof, it momentarily shuts off the display of the screen, like a short somewhere. Not a big deal because it turnes on about a second later, but maybe these mystery wires have something to do with it?

And also the numbers just below the compass seem to me like it would be some sort of tilt meter, like the 1st gen 4runners have. Yet they do nothing, never move no matter what position the 4runner is at. I can't find any info on a stock installed monitor in a Surf to find out what this does. This pic illustrats what I am talking about.

So my question to you field monitor unit owners is do you experience any "quirks" like I am? And does this "tilt meter" work for anyone else? Hopefully I'll figure out this whole mystery wire thing before long, and we can install these things the way they were truly meant to.

Beats me man about those two extra wires which I never figured out what for exactly...but if you do please share the knowledge as I'm also curious myself...

My sunroof tilt function works without interrupting the FMU screen and I left those two wires alone so, you must have some grounding issues somewhere.

Good point regarding those numbers below the compass...I'll try if mine works like a tilt meter next time and I'll let you know.

Yeah, those numbers are "tilt meter" (the exact name escapes me right now) if I remember correctly. Im deployed right now so I cant check my surf now, but I can check when I get back in 3 weeks if you still haven't figured it out..

Those wires are likely for the INCLINEOMETER . Theres probably supposed to be an external sensor for the inclineometer that your 4runner doesnt have, and thats why its not hooked up. Just a guess.

I have a factory installed one in my Surf, I can't tell you what the extra 2 wires are for as I've never had it apart, but I've never seen my tilt-meter move either, and I was watching it when offroading a few times where it should have registered a change if it was ever going to.

Where does your unit get it's info for the outside temp from? I would have guessed you'd need a sensor in the grille or something for that to work. I haven't looked into what is involved in retrofitting these into 4runners, do they come with the sensor?

Ah come on guys, that's not a tilt meter. If you look to the sides of that bar, it ends at 90, and says "L" or "R". Does that sound like tilt to you (It measures your tilt all the way to tipped on your side?)?

They use that 90L to 90R bar as the gauge for the compass. Notice that the "W" in the picture is 1 tick left of 0°, and the "N" is 1 tick left of 90°. When "W" hits 0°, you are heading West, and North is 90° to your right.

BTW, I don't have any little quirks with it, no dimming when opening the sunroof, and I dont' think I had those wires, though I might have just cut them off...

So far he has said he found 2 units in that junkyard, and he'll be bringing them back. He's also trying to figure out a way to bring back the 3rd gen hatches and tire carriers without breaking the bank. So we might be in for some Surf goodies in the near future. I'll let you know when he gets the stuff back.

Ok, that does make sense. I just wanted to make sure first that the factory installed ones wern't doing something awesome that we couldn't get ours to do.

Guess I'll go out and fix my ground now and see if that fixes my issues.

That makes perfect sense now that you say it, but it would be a lot cooler if it did have a tilt-meter built in, lol.

Next time I see someone parting out a Surf, I'll ask if they can trace those wires to their source. It still bugs me a ton!

Maybe [MENTION=62240]IanB[/MENTION] knows the answer to this now, since he must have pulled that thing apart when he parted out his Surf.

Just for future reference, listed below is the wiring diagram for a Toyota Hilux LN185 1996-2000 model also given to me by Soljah:

-Blue/Yel to constant 12 Volt
-Whi/Red to Switch 12v (ignition)
-Grn/Org to Speed sensor
-Blue to outside air temp sensor
-Yel/Blk to outside air temp sensor
-Whi/Blk to ground
-Green to dash clock (illumination)
-White to sunroof switch light dimmer
-Blu/White to sunroof switch light dimmer


I just put mine in and i did not see the importance for the sunroof dimmer so i just left them alone. I think those are the wires everyone is referring to!

Super cool unit! Do you have a picture of it installed, not just the screen?

How hard are these to find? I'd love a temp gauge in my 4runner.
