Those with air lockers

Have you seen any impact on gas mileage?

I can't see why there would be any, but I was talking to a guy with front and rear ARB air lockers on his FJ yesterday and he mentioned that it had impacted his gas mileage on the road.

That made no sense to me, but he said something about some occasional drag in the front. He also said something about his being a competition version of the ARB locker, so that may be the reason.

I'm not sure I'll even need lockers, but it is something I have been considering and was curious about any potential downsides.

Lockers have no impact on mpg. No idea what his issues are with them but they are very light, are on demand (don't actuate on pavement!). I did regear to 4.56 and that has an impact on mpg, but for me it is completely worth it and expected. I think my biggest hit was lift and tires not lockers and regearing. I am not trying to drive like a racer. I usually am between 70-75 on the freeway.

I don't know anything about a comp version of the ARB, but Yukon has a competition version of their Zip locker that is on by default, and uses air to turn off. Maybe this FJ guy has one of those.

Properly functioning air lockers will be completely transparent when turned off - that's the point of selectable lockers. Either this guy doesn't know what he has or what he has isn't working right.

I've always thought that I've wanted an air locker for the front on my trail. Probably completely unnecessary.

I'll have to get clarification next time I see him around. I know he did not re-gear because I specifically asked him about that. He seemed to indicate he lost about 2mpg because of some type of drag in the front that the locker he has caused.

He seemed knowledgeable, so I'm sure I'll get a better explanation next time I see him.

I'm having trouble resisting front and rear lockers. Its such an elegant and useful capability to have.

I have them and use them. Very useful with the rocks I have to climb here. The fronts I could probaby have gotten away with not having, but it has made some places much easier to go slowly which with the amount of armor I am running has really made wheeling much less mashing and much more crawling (the re-gear has been a huge improvement but is not for everyone). I like going slow and steady with maximum traction. A-Trac does work, the lockers are just one step more. In the 5 months I have had my lockers I have used them on about 4 wheeling trips.
