Thoughts on "power" flush of 2001 transmission

As background my 2001 is approaching 100K. I do a lot of the work but just don't care to mess with the transmission fluid. I have had the dealer do it every two years since buying it new in 2000. It has never been totally flushed and on the other hand drives like new. I was at the dealer today and talked with them. They want to drain all 13 quarts with a low pressure flush and then run detergent and then fill with 13 quarts. On one hand it sounds like a good idea but on the other hand I have heard bad things about the flushing breaking stuff loose and causing more issues. They also don't recommend dropping the pan and changing the filter. Thoughts?

well if what you say is true(not trying to call you a lier, just a bit over kill/obsessive) about the tranny fluid changes, then you havent had the same fluid in it long enough to even think about worrying about "dislodging" crud and having it mess things up. on the other hand if they are going though all that work why the heck wouldnt they want to drop the pan and change the tranny filter... idk id say if your that anal about tranny fluid then flush it, there is nothing wrong with them and do change the filter -just my thoughts

Ask them why not drop the pan and change the filter. I wonder what thats all about.

x2 on the flush loosening things up. I've heard that before too but not totally convinced that it's an issue.

General principle's in my book: Never run a "cleaner" or a "detergent" through an automatic transmission.

Tell them you want a complete fluid transfer, and a new filter. But NO detergents or cleaners. See what they say to that. If they won't do it, then I would want a good reason why.

I am thinking the same, I would not run any cleaner, detergent through it at all.

I would flush all the fluid out, drop the pan and check it is almost more important than changing the fluid.
Filter most likely will not need to be changed, if everything is in good shape with little to no metal dust then it really should look like brand new when you open it up.
At most might need to just run it through the parts cleaner, there is no actual "filter material" in it, all it is is a fine metal screen.

I would replace the standard ATF with what ever 100% Synthetic ATF that floats your boat, I like Amsoil but Redline is also just as good.
Then you can let it go for about 50K or more and not worry about it.
