Throttle Pedal Sensor Replacement

Pulled a code from by OBD scan tool today that says my throttle pedal sensor is acting up. Its an easy fix. The symptoms are basically, no acceleration. The engine is running and in gear but you can mash the gas but nothing happens. Replacing the "gas pedal" this week with a used one, quick fix. Will update when its complete. Has anyone else had to do this??

How many miles do you have on the clock? You're the first one I've heard of having this issue - in the past few years, at least.

I've always wondered how long it would be before one went bad (and we heard about it here). What did the used one cost you? Did you price a new one?

Are you gonna worry about doing the trim job on the pedal, or has that one had it (from the recall)?

I have 205K on the ole gal and I bought a used one for $50 off ebay. I think the new ones were about $125 at various places and upwards to $175. I just made sure that the part number off my OEM matched the one online and it did. Plug and play, took two starts and it was up and running. The check engine light and the traction control lights went out about 15 minutes after running the engine through its paces in traffic etc. I read several places in the forum that you could do all sorts of things to get the lights to turn off, but I just ran it and it took care of itself. I plugged in my OBD scanner just to make sure and it wasn't thowing any new codes or the TPS code either. Got lucky on this one!

Its been a week + and the V-8 is running like a champ again, easy fix and finding a used TPS on ebay saved the day.

So....I am driving down the road here in Virginia traffic and my TPS started acting up again. I quickly pulled over because if you ever have this happen to you, you will not have ANY throttle response! I shut the engine off, restarted it 2x and still have a check engine light and VSC light on the dash. Got home, used my OBD II tool and it pulled the same code, TPS Sensor. So, I will disconnect the battery to see if that works but am at a loss as to what may have happened. It could be a bad "used" TPS that I bought but I doubt it. Any one else gone through this ordeal??

Can you tell us the code it is spitting out?

This is not applicable to your post, but reading the OPs post confused me... TPS= Throttle Position Sensor and APP= Accelerator Pedal Position., both of which are tied into acceleration and normal driving, but are 2 separate components/sensors. There is no such thing as "throttle pedal sensor".

that used throttle seems to be defective also. it's not worth buying a used one when it comes to throttle control. get a new one and be happy for the next 200000 miles. :)

P2122 code

I got the CEL, VSC TRAC and VSC off on the dash the same day I discovered there was a rat in my 2003 4Runner V8 4x4. The T4R is in limp mode now. I scan it and it shows P2122 code - Throttle/Pedal Position/Switch "D" Circuit Low. Took the 4Runner to my local mechanic and they check it out and said its mostly the Accelerator Pedal or the ECM. The replacement is on back order with 4 weeks lead time so they couldn't fix it. I looked online (parts.toyota.com) and base on my VIN #, I found the replacement part number, 78120-04130 and it was available in the local dealer so I purchased it. While I was at the dealership, I asked them to confirm the part #, they said their system does not show this part is the direct replacement for my T4R. The system shows an older part number that is on back order. I took out the old one (78120-35460) and replaced with the new one I bought, this did not solved the problem. Still the same error code. Can someone shed some light on this? Is my replacement pedal the wrong one or defect or am i missing a step with the replacement? How to check if the pedal was/is good and if the wiring is good? I just purchased a mulitmeter and hoping to solve it but I am not sure what to look for. I searched here and online but I couldn't find anything related to this issue with a 4th Gen T4R. Thank you in advice for any advise.

If you had a rodent issue, I'd be checking electrical circuits for continuity and such. I suspect your wiring harness is likely damaged somewhere.

I don't usually see accelerator pedals fail (I think I have maybe seen one?), unfortunately you'll likely need to pull off the dash at least to really inspect everything after you've narrowed down any possible damage.

In your case, after determining that there's possible electrical damage, we'd advise you to get ahold of your insurance to authorize further tear down and inspection and assessment of the extent of the rodent damge (most of the time on older vehicles it results in them getting totaled out).

Could you tell me if an FJ Cruiser pedal is compatible with these? With supply issues, and my truck being an import, I always keep an eye on spare parts compatibility and availability issues. I was idly browsing throttle bodies earlier, to see if it was worth ordering a spare.

In your case I'd try a website like Partsouq.com or similar international Toyota Parts website and VIN filter your vehicle, because US-Bound Vehicles might have different parts that international/country specific models and I have no real way to tell beyond publicly available 3rd party websites (I had to deal with this when we had a German LC200 with a Turbo Diesel show up for a turbo replacement, used PartSouq for all the part numbers and diagrams because Toyota will not let US Dealers see non-US spec data, FSMs, EWDs, etc. The vehicle wouldn't even show up via VIN in any of our systems, it's just that compartmentalized.)

For my US-spec 2004 V8 4WD 4Runner the Accelerator Link (pedal assembly) is listed as P/N:78120-35460 (appears to be the original part number), this seems to be the pedal assembly listed for 2003-2009 models regardless of configuration for US bound vehicles. When looking up a US bound FJ Cruiser I see that part number and an additional part listed, I am not sure what the filtering is for which FJ got which pedal and if they are compatible.

The good news is searching the original part number shows a few supersessions (weirdly enough PartSouq is usually good about listing these, but in the case of this pedal and it's superseded part numbers you have to manually search them, an interesting failure on their part) and the superseded part number is 78120-04130, this part number fits basically all 4th gen 4Runners, FJ Cruisers, and Tacomas (at least US bound models as far as I can tell). I am guessing this was a post "UIA" pedal contracted to simplify parts supply for these vehicles (not uncommon for Toyota to consolidate an updated part to streamline parts for out of production vehicles).

Assuming that your imported 4Runner (do you mean that it was originally an international Hilux Surf model from Japan or that you had a US-Spec 4Runner shipped to the UK?) uses the many of the same parts, then P/N: 78120-04130 should be the pedal you're looking for; you can also use an old pedal from an FJ Cruiser if it's got the same part number as yours.

Thanks for that! Mine is a Japanese market model (So right hand drive) that I imported to the UK.

Just out of interest do your V6 models have an EGR valve? I was looking into cleaning mine, and it turns out it doesn't have one!

Toyota has played with excluding the EGR off and on on various vehicles, I can't keep track of which ones do and don't have them anymore to be honest with you. Most likely because they use the VVTi to function similarly to an EGR by allowing some exhaust to get sucked back into the cylinder. Though I think the most notable exception to that rule is some of the newer Hybrid engines, they do have an EGR and EGR cooler assembly.

I do believe that the 1GR-FE never got an EGR valve in it's production run; they just went with air injection later down the road on the Dual VVTi units. But that's from a US perspective, so I am not entirely sure what was done from an emissions standpoint on non-US models.

That's interesting about the VVTI setup, what an elegant solution compared to the crude EGR.

Similar issues with pedal

I have an 07 and lately it’s been running rough almost like it’s mis firing (but I replaced plugs and coils) and when I go to accelerate nothing happens then it snaps into acceleration seeming like the pedal is faulty but every now and then it will pull a cel and go into limp mode but when I reset ( pull negative) it will run fine for a day or two, so now I’m stuck between pedal, fuel issues or vvti solenoids.. unfortunately I can’t find anyone with similar issues.
