We have a 2014 with 340K miles on it. It regularly goes back and forth between Southern California and Montana. It has never posted more than 19+ mpg on the highway. Experience says best mpg is between 60 and 70 mph. Go above 80 mph and the mpg drop into the 18 range.
We have a new 2023 ORP and it’s posting the same mpg figures. There is no difference in performance between the two.
This, of course, makes complete sense. The 2010 4Runner has a 4.0L V6, 5-speed automatic, and 31.6" tires. The 2023 4Runner has the same. No performance difference, no real-world MPG difference between the two.
The EPA ratings dropped through the years because the EPA test methodology itself got tougher. Chances are, the 2023 4Runner's test was subject to much harder acceleration, more changes in speed, and more idling time than the 2010 was at the time of 2010 testing.
I've gotten 25mpg on my 2023 on multiple 200+ mile runs; probably because I find it really relaxing to cruise 65mph on two-lane rural highways, and I really let speed bleed on steep uphills rather than holding 65mph at 3500RPM. :biggrin1:
