Tigger's Build and Mis-Adventures

Carp Trail - Off-road Adventure to Caliente, NV

Needed to get out of the house on Sat and hadn't taken the beast off-road since the new tires were added. Headed out to Mesquite, NV but was so late, really didn't have time to venture into Utah to explore so backtracked about 20 miles to a road called the Carp Trail. It's a long dusty road that takes you into Caliente. Looked like it might be interesting so gave it a shot.

Shot of the long road ahead.

About a mile in, saw a Ford Aerostar on the side of the road. A head popped up as I drove by so backed up to see if he was OK. Turns out the guy had pulled off to the side to get a drink and got high centered. Looked like he had been there a while trying to dig out with a snow shovel. (wasn't having much luck) Offered to yank him out as I had my tow strap with me. As we were hooking up and guy from the RailRoad drove by as asked if he was still stuck. Said the guy had been there quite a while (the nearest tracks were 40 miles away). Was surprised he hadn't tried to pull him out but may have not had the equipment or allowed to do that with a company truck. Unfortunately I didn't think to snap a pic of the guys van until after he had already taken off. He told me he was a Vietnam vet and on his first tour, had to slash the throats of a bunch of the enemy and it had really screwed him up. He seemed to be in a big hurry to leave as he tore out of there but was thankful for the assistance.

A shot of where he was high centered

Stopped as the sun was setting behind the hill to eat some dinner. Found that pouring some water on a rock kept most of the flies away.

After 52 miles of this dirt/gravel road, this was the only rock I saw in the tread. These tires seem to clear pretty well.

Still a ways to go to civilization.

Total distance on the trail was 56 miles. It was pretty smooth so made good time. Was hitting up to 60 mph at times but since I had aired down to 18 psi not knowing what the trail would be like, I didn't want to push it. The 4Runner handled great. The suspension soaked up everything well and it was really quiet inside. The whoops and dips were fun and never bottomed the suspension out, although came close once.

The trail ends at a highway that looks like it gets very little use. It was fun carving the canyons using all the road without worrying about seeing anyone. The one shocker was barreling down the road only to run into this. No warning signs at all, although the next one did.

It was a nice afternoon drive, but still had 2 hours to go to get home once I arrived in Caliente.

A short vid of part of the trail. I had passed the fun stuff before I thought about recording. I think the sound is being picked up via Bluetooth from the phone mic near the sunroof.

Those Coopers eject pretty well. My KO2s on the other hand are still hiding rocks from last year.

wow, you're awesome

wow, you're awesome! I just read this entire thread. Very enjoyable, thanks for posting. Your rig looks great, I love your sliders, they're so nice and tight up against the rockers, really a good look. I admire your skills and dedication.

:tea: Thanks. That is why I chose the sliders. They tuck up very well.

Power Inverter

Started the weekend by installing an 800w inverter for my upcoming trip. Took longer than expected as I had to do some relocation of the connectors under the driver's seat. This unit was taller than I thought. Power was pulled from the distribution block under the passenger seat.

Added a little protection to keep me from accidentally turning the unit on, until I get a chance to wire up the remote switch. (there is a small rubber bumper to keep it from pressing the button

Fridge Slider

I have the slider frame built for about 2 months but have been trying to figure out a way to actually attach it. I don't know if this is the best way, and can't say for sure it would hold in a violent rollover but is should work for the upcoming 18 day adventure.
I still need to do some work on it, but the main structure is in place.

LOL!

You and rollovers and flops! Don't make me pull the pics of that blue vehicle you used to have!!!

Send me your sched so I know when you'll be here so I don't schedule jobs on those days.

Fix your eyeball on there yet??? Hehehehe...

Roof Top Tent (RTT)

I picked up a hard top rooftop tent for my 2.5 week trip around the PNW. Plan on fishing my way around OR, WA, MT, WY and maybe Canada.

It's an iKamper Hardtop One. It's kind of cool in that is has a sliding tray to extend the inside area 3 additional feet to a 6' x 7' sleeping area.

North West Fishing/Off Road Tour

I decided I needed to escape the Vegas heat for a while, (it was 114 the 2 days before I left) so I figured I would head to a hopefully cooler part of the country.

During an uneventful trip to Boise, I actually achieved 17 mpg this time which was impressive considering the tent and awning are on top. (last time it was between 8 and 12 because of the wind and no tent or awning)

Over the course of this trip, I will be fishing my way across Oregon(my next stop, Bend, OR) then on up to Portland to fish the Wilson. Then heading to Seattle to see what fishing adventures it holds. From there I will either head to BC for some Canadian fish, or head over to Cascadia National Park for fishing and sightseeing. Then on over to Eureka MT and down to explore Glacier National Park. Heading on down to Missoula and the valley to the south. Then working my way over to Bozeman, and depending on time, money and sanity, I may head into Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons parks, or if it just way too crowded, may just head down to fish the Henry's Fork of the Snake river. No matter what happens it should be an interesting and fun time. (disclaimer, I have threatened my boss that I might make a wrong turn after Seattle and keep heading North and would need an extra week of vacation as I would accidentally end up in Alaska for some Pizza at Moose's Tooth in Anchorage.

This afternoon we headed out to the Owyhee river to get in some fishing. The flows he recently increased so the water was a little murky. Surprisingly there were quite a few others out on the river today. So we kept driving to near the dam. Found a nice spot and went back to the car to gear up. By the time we got back there was already someone there so we had to move further up stream. Found a nice spot about 150 yards up and prepared to fish. First cast and bam, a slurper grabbed my fly and bolted. Unfortunately he bolted around the rocks and I reeled up no fish and no flies. Damn, last of those two flies I had.

So tied on another pair and set to fishing again. Meantime, Brenda has gotten set up and moved upstream about 20 yards. Short time later she is into a good sized trout. She manages to land it and then let it go to continue with its life. A few minutes later my indicator disappears and my line starts stripping. Hooked into a nice one. Fought him for a while then noticed that he isn't coming in straight. I had managed to hook him in the belly. Grabbed the net to get him in quickly and get the hooked released. Took a good solid minute of babysitting him to get him revived from that ordeal. A beautiful 19" rainbow.

Shortly after I hook into my 3rd one and managed to bring him quickly but again, had a hard time reviving him. Didn't think this one would make it. I rolled him over to make sure that wasn't a spot in his belly from a hook. He just laid upside down, probably thinking, this is it, I am done. But after about 2 minutes he perked up and kicked off with some force.

Now of course, during all of this we forgot the camera. Brenda hooked into another nice one and got him landed fairly quickly. He swam off after a few seconds.

She ran off to hit the rr and grab a camera. We fished about another 20 min but it was getting late and we needed to get. I stated that I hoped one of us caught a nice fish so we at least had a pic. And I hooked into one just before we were ready to leave, of course it being the smallest of the day. But that is OK. Caught my 2 biggest trout ever, landed 3, lost 2, Brenda landed 2 and lost 3.

Great way to start my fishing trip. (I need to get a cheap waterproof camera to keep with me. My phone is too big to fit in my waders pocket)

Below is the one fish we actually got a picture of. It was the smallest of the 5.

Another good day fishing. Went back to the same spot and they were still there. Had to work a little harder for them today. Probably saw heavy fishing in the morning with all of the people in the area.

Here are a couple of pics of the spot we were at and some of today's catch and release.

Thank You

I finally left the good fishing of Boise and headed to Bend to meet up with a friend. I got there too late to do any fishing but it was good to catch up.

A couple pics of the camp site and the snow capped mountains.

Adding a few more pics of Crane Prairie Reservoir

And this is Waldo lake. Supposedly one of the top 5 cleanest and clearest lakes in the US.

After a quick stay in Bend I decided to head down to Crater lake since I had never been there before. That is one amazing sight as you walk up and peer over the crater's edge. The Blue is mesmerizing.
