Time to Mod 33s or 32s

Hey all. I'm back to a 4Runner after a few years away form my 96. I bought a 98 last year and I think I'm finally ready to go all in on the lift and tires having never gotten the chance to lift my first. The hold up here is what to do with it. I went to a god shop this weekend to get some numbers with the mind set of getting a 2" body lift, 2" suspension and 32"x10"x16" wheel package.

Surprisingly there was another 3rd gen out front with a bit more. This one pictured below has a 3" suspension, 3" body and 33"x10.5"16" wheels. I personally think it's just to much for me.

My next to it:

The guys at the shop told me I'd want the same thing and here is what they quoted me:

  • 3" BOdy Lift $700
  • 0"-3" Fabtech Adjustable Suspension for $1500

So I just wanted some opinions here on price and the overall setup. I think the 3" body lift was stretching it. I didn't like the amount of gap from the side honestly.

I also think and adjustable suspension is overkill for me. I'm never going to adjust it. Do I need this? Is there really no price difference or is it a good thing to have?

What is everyone's thoughts on a 2" body, 3" suspension with 32s vs. the above?

What does everyone think of the pricing with installation? Does that sound reasonable? I'm not even going to think about doing this myself... I have absolutely no time to screw it up or be without the truck :)

Thanks everyone! It's good to be back!

You can fit 32" without any lift.

Maybe the thing scaring you about those tires is the width? I don't like tires that wide.

I'd probably do a 3" suspesion lift and a 1" body lift.

What are your goals for the lift? Are you going to use it offroad?

I put 32s on my 96' with no issue. This time I do want to go up and out. Like you said, it's probably the width but the body lift seems way to extreme. Again, I was just thinking like a 2" and a 2" with 32" tires and a bit of a wider tire/offset you know? I was just worried not going up enough was going to give me rub issues with a wider setup.

Goals are to just look good and hit the and in NC over the summer on the usual vacation. I'm not rock climbing in Colorado or anything :)

If your not going to be doing much offroading I wouldn't get that lift from that shop. $1,500 is too much.

So you want to go with like 285's? I think you need around a 3" lift to do that. It would make more sense it just go with a 3" suspension lift instead of a 2" suspension lift and 1" body lift. All suspension would probably be easier and cheaper. Make sure you get a differential drop if your going above a 2" suspension lift.

your prolly scared because you think those tires are 33 by 10.5 but by lookin at the comparison i would say that they're at least 35 by 12.5.

Possibly! You never know... I wouldn't say I'm so much scared, just that I plan don't like the look. It looks like a moon walker or something. Maybe it's the super small rims and the huge side wall or something... the proportions just aren't right here.

Case in point... this guy posted on a VA thread a bit back and his truck looks AWESOME!!!

I have heard not so good things about fabtech coilovers, which is what would be on their adjustable lifts. Check out swayaway and icon for some other coilover options. As fas as the amount of lift. I would recomend a 3 inch suspension with 285/75/r16's. But that's because I run that. I will post a pic in a few hours. I like how the tires fill up the space of the wheelwell with tha

I mean do I have to get an adjustable kit? Is that all they are making these days? I would assume no, that there are other fixed height kits out there correct? I also would assume that a fixed height is cheaper no? Are they about the same price these days?

Why would I want an adjustable suspension? I'm not going to drop it 2" one week and raising it 1" the next you know? To me I would only think you want an adjustable on like a car that you race on the weekends and drive daily etc. You'd want it stiffer on a track and softer on the streets etc.

I can see it with a truck I guess too... more travel when you hit terrain etc but again... I'm not really ever doing anything besides hitting the beach in the summer and in all honesty the truck is fine as is for that LOL. This shit is for style... nothing more. It's like 24", they server no purpose hehehe.

Yeah man. Fixed height lifts are more popular and abundent than adjustable ones.

I think the first thing you need to do is figure out what size tire you want to run. From there you can pick out the lift that will allow you to clear them.

Not yet. If that's meant for me. I will post it in a new thread tomorrow morning with pics. iv been super busy with school. Well anyways it will give you some examples of what your runner could look like, adjustable lift or not. They both look the same. And as far as th adjusting part. No one changes them week to week. They are a pain in the butt to adjust. They are useful to get an exact amount of lift and over time your springs sag so you can adjust them back up. Plus most of the adjustable setups are coilovers and therefore completely revalveable and resealable. They will last the life of the vehicle. But if its all for show a space lift on top of the existing struts would be the cheapest.

First of all, I've never heard anything great about Fabtechs. If you want a solid lift, go to Sonoran steels website and check out their lifts. It'll be cheaper than the fabtechs, too.

Secondly, do you need 33's? Are you going to be wheeling where 33's are necessary? Also realize going from 32's to 33's, the mpg will take a big hit.

ok I got a new quote today from another shop and it had it's own surprise. They said they don't carry a 3rd gen body lift kit. They know they are out there but I have to bring my own in ie:4Crawler etc. This shop says a 3" lift will be fine with 285,75,16 on Eagle 16x8 alloys. Bilstein shocks.

Tires, rims, mounting, balance, shocks, spacers, labor etc $3000 out the door. The body lift is additional of course.

Dont waste your money on a FabTech!!! Dont do it!

Ok, now that I've got that off my chest....

Sonoran Steel is the very best lift you can put on your rig. I bought the system 1.2 and that is the one you want. The shocks are Bilstein coilovers in front and lancruiser coils in rear. All the shocks are revalved for the weight of our 4runners.

www.sonoransteel.com

I'm not affiliated with Sonoran Steel. I did a TON of research and that was the best out there. It is 100% complete. And you can install it yourself if you are good with tools.

The owner, Steve Schaeffer is very quick at getting back to you about answering any questions you have before and after purchase.

Also, stick to a 1.5-2" Body lift if you plan to do any serious wheeling. Any higher and you are just going to end up on your side a lot faster.

Any tire size smaller than 33" just wouldnt look right with that combo.

Lift discussion and wheel question

I have done a good amount of research on the lift kits and agree 100 pct that sonoran is the way to go. 7.2 and 7.1 are both great kits, and if you have him install the top plates then you have a bolt on lift for less than 1500. Great deal, and great quality

Here is my question to the forum:

Lets say I go with the 2.5" lift and want to do either 33" or 34" tires, prob 10.5 inch wide. How much back space do I need on the wheels to ensure no rubbing? I can't find any literature on this.

help plx

Thanks!

I'm not shure about back spacing but I know that a 33's with a 2.5 inch lift will rub horribly on the rear when its articulated. I have a 3 inch lift and it was soooo bad that it was keeping my truck from rolling. So I extended the rear bumpstops 3 inches and put daystar ones on. And the front will rub the plastic wheel lining too. Just letting you know. Mine is 100% good now but it took some time to figure all that out. And I would never go back

With the sonoran steel suspension lift (I would get system 1.2 personally) you want 3.5" backspaced wheels when running 35's. The Mickey Thompson Classic II is the most popular and has the correct backspacing of 3.5". The offset of that wheel is -22mm. That is ideal.

I personally am running a 4.5" backspaced wheel with a -12mm offset. Along with 35X12.50X17 Trxus M/T's. I clear the upper arms by about 1/2". I do rub the frame just a bit at full lock.

With a 10.5" wide tire you can probably get away with the stock wheels just fine. The stock wheel backspace is around 4.625".

Trimming is definitely needed for 35's. Not so much for 33's if you are running a 1.5-2" body lift. Probably just the pinch welds in the inner fender and trimming the front valance.

On the rear you would have to trim back the rear of the fender where the bumper is.

I'm thinking about going all black on everything but I'm not sure given the light paint color. Black Wheels, runners, grill etc. Thoughts?
