Timely review, 4Runner Trail v. Jeep GC

Links?

Anyways, each manufac gets their time to shine with each media source. And once it is their turn, they pay for it.

"Hey Ford, nice new gen F150, you are the Truck of the Year. Now pay us." Next year, "Hey Chevy, nice new gen Silverado, you are the Truck of the Year. Now pay us."

Do YOU have any links to support your view??

As seen above, MT had gone out of their way to support Toyota where appropriate. They even made the infamous Camry winner over domestics!

So, it is up to YOU GUYS to back up your claims!

You're making your own argument against yourself. Lets take this one step further--- if nobody is buying the magazine, then who is going to advertise in it? Why would a car company spend its advertising dollars on a print ad in "Car and Motor" magazine, when it only prints and distributes only 1,000 magazines each month?

Anyone who has ever taken an advertising/marketing class understands that ad sales are intended to reach a broad audience (or sometimes a niche audience) in the case of car ads. So believe me when I say that no magazine on earth will make money on selling ads if they don't have a decent following. Just won't happen....
the simple fact is that ad sales —not rack/subscription sales— are the #1 source of revenue for most publications. you seem to have this inverted, but this is the point, really. yes, of course there has to be an established readership for the advertisers to want to buy ad space in the first place. but regardless of however many eyeballs view the pages, the ad revenue far outweighs the money publishers make selling magazines. this is the reason why the publishing industry is in a free-fall right now. among many others, Newsweek just went under, for example. Reed Business just shuttered its publishing division, i believe.

there are fewer readers, sure, but for every reader they lose there is essentially a loss in ad revenue that is an order of magnitude greater.

an easy to remember formula: ad $ > X

Do you guys believe that Toyota/Lexus is paying CS and JD Powers to rank them #1?? So, is Toyota the #1 employer for CS and JD? How is CS different from C&D or MT?

Links to what? Are you asking for links that support my statement that auto mags often have to make due with the cars that are available for testing? If so, I can only say that I've read many comparison reviews where the cars weren't matched up very well and in the text it was stated that the road test editors would have liked a car optioned differently, but there were no press vehicles available that matched what they wanted at the time the comparison testing was being done. This is fairly common knowledge among regular readers of auto enthusiast magazines.

Did that happen in the article that started the thread?

Look up TOY awards last time Ford and Chevy released current gen trucks.

I personally have worked for Ford, Toyota and BMW. Friends have worked for Chevy, Nissan, Infiniti, Lexus, etc. We share the same stories about this. Each brand takes their turn to eat at the trough and pays for it monetarily.

Ok, so is CS or JD Powers on toyota's payroll?? And how do you explain MT #1 ranking of Camry in the recent comparo among domestics (please read POST #108)...at a time when everyone was shitting on Toyota??

What kind of jobs did your friends have at these manufacturers? IF your theory is true, then the "bribing of the media" is probably a very secretive thing...i doubt the regular workers have any idea about any of this. Theories and what your neighbor's neighbor of a grandson of a guy who used to work at GM said are probably not factual.:D

Do a search for GM pulling advertising from LA Times.

BMW is an amazing vehicle. And they offer amazing perks to their "best friends".

The "Advertisement" notification has many loopholes and is stretched. It is a cut-throat world out there.

In all, I read the reviews and make my own judgment about how biased or influenced the editorial might be. This is true for all types of products.

Anyone care to tell share their thoughts on this? I missed any replies.

It is not bribing.

Each manufac buys advertising and pays a lot of money to use MT COTY logos in advertising. Same for Consumer Reports, C&D and the rest. Each manufac gets their turn. Each manufac is happy and continues to buy more ad space. Circle of life.

Yeah, i am sure that some manufacturers are pissed about the result of the reviews...what is your point?

Did the LA Times change their ways to glorify GM after GM pulled the plug? No. In fact, your post makes my point. IF GM had so much financial influence in the LA Times, THEN LA Times would NOT have publish any articles that make GM look bad, right??? LA Times would still be glorifying GM cars. Obviously, this did NOT happen...so, apparently, there are still a few independent-thinking editors out there!

Did that happen in the article that started the thread?

Are you asking for facts or opinions? Common sense would say that a Trail vs. a Limited isn't the best comparison. Perhaps a Limited vs. a Limited would be a better comparison....or an SR5 vs. a Laredo would even make a lot of sense.

So you tell me, did that happen in the article that started this thread?

I searched, but couldn't find any good information on that. I found an article or two mentioning that GM was pulling its ads, but nothing on the actual events that led up to that. If you know where there is a good article or two about it, you should post it instead of asking people to search themselves.

And yet, GM and Ford lost to the Camry. Lexus GX470 won FourWheeler of the Year TWICE (in a row!! One of which over a Chrysler vehicle, Jeep Rubicon). Lexus lost in comparos in C&D. Cadillac CTS-V coupe won in Edmunds over BMW M3. BMW M3 won over CTS-V in MT.

Do you see something here? The winner of the comparos has very little (if at all) to do with the advertisements. In fact, i don't see BMW ads much...certainly not anymore than Lexus or Mercedes in Car & Driver (aka BMW's whore apparently to Koz and other Lexus fans). In fact, i can't remember the last time a Mercedes won in a comparo within the past year.

LOL, LongBallLarry...did you just quote yourself and reply to yourself? That's funny!

BTW, both of the situations you mentioned (GM and Toyota) are involving newspapers. I don't know about you, but a newspaper isn't where I'll go when I'm looking for a good article/road test/comparison review of a motor vehicle.

That said, I think I'd hold magazines like Car and Driver and Motor Trend to a higher standard than any newspaper. Do you know of any car company that pulled advertising out of a mainstream car magazine due to poor reviews and such? Now that is something that would be interested to read about...

GM pulled advertising after several poor reviews. What do you think about it?

Koz, do you have any explanations for MT's horrid behavior recently in defending Toyota and crowning the Camry #1?? Your theory seems to dictate otherwise.

Here's my theory. Toyota has been beaten up so bad by almost everyone that now after they have accomplished their objective and the fact that allot of what happened has shown to be unwarranted, the media now has to worry about their patrons. When it was safe to throw Toyota under the bus, almost everyone was on the band wagon, now that the bell was rung and allot of the facts are out they would look like they were kicking them when they were down. Cover your A$$! Yah, now they are defending them!
