Timing belt bad?

Is there an easy way to tell if my timing belt is bad or needs to be replaced? The PO didn't know of it ever being done but I'm hoping the person before him did it. Just hit 189k the other day.

If it is dry and cracked I would certainly replace it.


Actually, I would just do that anyway, as I did when I got my truck. Along with a bunch of other stuff, check the first post of my thread.

If you decide to replace it for the peace of mind, I think most members here would direct you in the direction if an oem timing belt kit from ebay seller aircabinman.

I'd do it, too, but no need to panic. They very rarely fail on their own, even at miles higher than yours. A seized water pump or idler, failed tensioner or coolant leak is what kills them. So take your time, then do all of the above so as to have a baseline and peace of mind. It's non-interference, so worst case is getting stuck by the side of the road. Higher priority if you like to wheel out beyond where Judas lost his boots (colorful Brazilian saying).

Pulling the inspection cover off the top is an easy way to check. There are a few 10mm bolts and the upper radiator hose comes off or you can slide it over. Just remember to not let any antifreeze get on the belt.
