First post. Trying to clear up something after seeing a reply (several times) on this forum, but something totally contrarian in person and in ads.
I've got a damaged '98 T4R and am wanting to get an '01-'05 replacement. On this forum several veteran posters have answered queries on timing belts and chains with this edict: V6 - chain, V8 - belt. or similar phrases thereof. Today I looked (in person) at an '01 that the owner said had the timing belt replaced. I said, so it's a V8 and he said, no a V6 and lifting the hood, it was. It even had the Toyota sticker on the engine saying something pre-printed like "Timing belt replaced" and with a marker was "105,000" miles. So what is up with this?
I saw at least 3 ads on craigslist in my area where the owners stated they had the timing belt replaced and they all stated the engines were V6s. Are there exceptions to the rule "V6 - belt, V8 - chain?" I'm confused...
