Timing Belt or Chain?

I've been looking at the Edmunds.com manuals, but can't find if the newer 4Runners have timing belts or chains. If it's a belt, what is the maint. interval?

That depends on what you mean by 'newer'. I have an '03, and as I understand it, the V6 has a chain, and the V8 has a belt. I do not remember seeing any info on a change interval for a chain, but the belt varies from 60k to 90k depending on year and engine. I would check your manual.

V6-chain. No maintanence.

According to the scheduled maintenance guide, the timing belt should be replaced at 90k miles on the V8. I'd guess that implies the V6 has a chain and doesn't require maintenance.

The V8 has a belt and should be changed at 90,000 miles. The engine is a Interference engine, meaning if the belt breaks the valves stop while the pistons keep moving until you stop, there by bending the valves or as you put it "the engine is hosed".

Here is a link about interference engines along with a picture of the crunch of a interference engine. You can also click on "timing replacement guide" which shows you the Toyota 4.7 V8 is a belt and needs replacing at 90,000 and is a interference engine, just in case you don't belive me. :
