Hello,
I live in California and it's time for my 4runner to pass emissions. In preparation, I checked the timing to confirm that everything was set as it should be. I jumped the connectors (check engine light flashing) and noticed that my timing was way advanced (maybe 20 degrees BTDC). So, I adjusted the timing to 10 degrees BTDC. Now, it runns terribly (even less power). I have checked the timiming with and without the connectors jumped, and it seems to have not affect on the timing. Additionally, my 4runner has never really idled. When fully warmed up, it's always been at about 1000 rpms.
Is it possible that the throttle position sensor isn't properly adjusted and the idle circuit isn't acutally engaging? I am thinking if the ECU doesn't realize that the engine is idling, then jumping the connectors would have no effect, and I may have retarded the timing to close to zero.
What are your thoughts? Please help! Emissions were due in April!
