Timing on an 86' 4Runner???

I wonder if there are any 'alternate' ways to time my truck? I have the manual and I've looked at this page -Toyota 4Runner and Pickup: Cheap Tricks - unfortunately, for some reason I can't short my test connector - it doesn't short when I use the appropriate tool (aka paperclip...).

Is there any other way to short this connector? Perhaps is there another test connector located somewhere else in the truck??

I need to set my timing so I can pass smog...what fun...

Download the FSM in the sticky. There's a section in the EFI topic that deals with your issue where the RPM will not decrease when te-e1 are jumped.

But you can roughly time your engine to 13* BTDC without jumping them. That will get you within a degree or two but not perfect.

I'll take a look. It's weird - apparently I can get the check engine light to work appropriately by shorting the connector, but can't get the RPM to decrease...

Mine doesn't decrease in rpm either but I set it anyway and when I took it to the smog shop it passed just fine. I geuss when the ref checked the timing he got the same results but it tested fine anyhow.

If your RPM doesn't drop then you definitely have a problem. It could be a vacuum leak, bad tps, or even a bad ecu. You should definitely look further in to that.
