Timing (PICS)

Ya but what are you going to do when you have to torque it down to 217ftnlbs? Well to replace the front main seal you have to remove timing gear. I tore it down because my crank pulley was wobbling so I thought it. Was loose which it wasn't, woodruff key was worn so I replaced it. And replaced pulley but I still have the wobbles. It's the same thing as doing a tb job. i just reused my timing belt. Also make sure you have it on the correct side when you bump it loose.

Good question guess I'll see how tight I can tq it down before needing a special tool..
Now it makes sence lol

I have done a fair amount of work on engines where I have had to remove the crankshaft bolt and I have never torqued them back down when re-installing them. I use an impact gun and hammer it down for a few seconds and call it good. I have never had one come loose and they are always tight enough to where I have to use a breaker bar and some muscle when removing them again. There are only a few things I use a torque wrench for on engines which are ALL engine internals, head bolts, clutch pressure plates and maybe a few other misc parts here and there. For the most part, hardware is either German torque or thrown on with my impact gun.

There was an SB for 4runners i believe where their original torque on the crank bolt wasn't enough which was 160 IIRC so they upd it to 217. What's your impacts max torque at?

I'm not sure, it's a beat up craftsman impact gun so I don't think it gets anywhere near the 200 mark. But since you mentioned that I'll keep a very close eye on it for a while.

Iv read some horror stories of crank bolt coming loose and causing some catastrophic damage just a heads up.

I'm confused how would re tq down work the same way? Motor only rotates one direction?

Sorry I was thinking about using the frame rails with cheater bar. You can do this to losen the crank bolt -starter bump, and to tighten the bolt, long pipe for leverage and something to put against the frame rail to keep it from turning over.

Don't expect to be done with this anywhere near just "a hour"

Don't torque the crank bolt with anything other than a "torque" wrench

Do buy THE tool or one that will work like mentioned above chain wrench, so you can torque it properly!

Oh, and to change the tensioner you don't have to touch the a/c bracket. Use a long 1/4" extension with a wobble socket and you can get to the tensioner bolts.

Here's my favorite write up for the timing belt, although he doesn't change the tensioner.

Well I got the timing done, by far the easiest job ave ever done on a vehicle.
Word of advise if you coke across this problem, I had to put on the belt 4 different times because every time I would put the belt on the crank mark after rotating it would be off 1 tooth(advanced), so to finally fix it I put the belt on with the crank off 1 tooth (retarded) rotated it back to tdc and all marks where correct.

All I have to say about my truck is wow I was missing out so much more power.
So in about 5 hours I did timing belt/tensioner/water pump/thermostat/all drive belts/oil change/and external trans cooler..
And to top off a bad week I do all that work and my starter is going out on me now solenoid I'm assuming.
