Tint

Chelu,
Just roll down ur windows when u see a cop. My old neighbor is a cop and has 30% on all windows on his Accord. I asked him if that was legal and he said no. His reply was u need tint out here in So Cal especially during the summer. My buddies neighbor, a CHP has 5% tint all around his Tahoe. Go figure. Unless the cop is a real arse then he will bust u. All of my cars now are tinted. I wouldn't worry about it. Now if ur Runner is full faced like most cars on Guam then that's a different story.

SERNNR,
What did you mean by "full faced"?

if you dont want to have a problem with tint laws, move to florida... im "full faced" with 5% around the rest and as long as im not a jerk on the roads and speeding or swerving, cops wont bother, i actually think its only ticketable as a second offense AFTER you have been pulled over for something, i may be wrong on that, but yes, i have gotten a tint ticket before, but that was back in high school when i had the front windshield done in mirror (dont ask me what i was doing, i was young and stupid and hadnt developed taste yet)

anytime that i have been unfortunate enough to get pulled over i always roll down all windows (even the back) so that the cop wont feel threatened and can see everything better than he could thru clear glass, they usually dont bring up the tinted windshield unless they are having a bad day. its not that hard to see out of at night, you get kinda used to it, if your eye sight isnt good or you just cant drive, maybe get some back up sonar's and listen to the beep.

Went around town this weekend lookin' for a good tint place. I also found out that being stationed in a Naval Base here I have to make sure that the front tint has to be at least 30%.
One place in particular caught my attention. See pic below and notice the bottom. They qoute me $50 with 1-year warranty. Then they SCRAPE!

Go to Island Tinting near the Micronesia Mall. Got my moms Pathfinder tinted all the way around 20% for $150 and they removed the old tint as well. They do clean work.

I recommend Llumar tints as well. They offer a lifetime guarantee against chipping, fading, cracking or peeling. And you can go to any dealer who sells it and the warranty will be honored. I have it on my mustang and they way the windows are designed after a while it starts to peel the edge of the tint off the top of the window. So i just took my car in and they redid the tint for me free.

HAWAII Tint laws:

Trucks and SUVs: 35% forward of the A Pillar with the lowest variance at 27% I believe. Rearward of the A-Pillar - Paint your windows with Black paint if you want.

Cars however are 35% all around with variance to 27% again (Im pretty sure its 27 around there-I forget the exact figure)

Anything on the front windshield cannot go below that ANSE line thats about 4 inches from the top of the glass.

Any window film violation is citable PER WINDOW!!:awais:Yikes!!

The ghetto tint looks great. Ofcourse its not like you have an option since privacy glass is standard, I have never seen an 02-06 without tint? I have never looked at it much but privacy glass is coloured glass not tint right? I also did the front windows, but there is a noticable colour difference in the sunlight.

i feel the same way about the front window tint and the removal of the front license plate. makes the 4runner look way better but it is technically illegal. i don't think that you will get cited for those two reasons alone. i don't think a police officer will go out of their way to give you a fix-it ticket. but, if you where to get pulled over for any reason, the officer may bust you for those two things also. i say do it.

correct, the rear windows are dyed like that, which is why people have troble matching color and % and when they finally do they get into their car are complain that it doesnt look the same from inside

it really depends on where you are.
A friend of my GF got a ticket because the cop stopped behind at red noticed she didn't get registration renewed. I would not take chances in my area.

hey at least it will give you a reason to drive safer, and in turn if your with nationwide, your insurance goes down!! :biggrin2:

I have a 3rd gen and have an appointment this afternoon to get my front windows tinted. The guy said it would take 20% to factory match it. I was wondering about passing inspection. I just passed inspection yesterday and made the tint appointment within 5 minutes of leaving the place but I'm worried about next year. I live in DC and any aftermarket tint is illegal. How am I supposed to pass inspection with tint next year? Do I have to remove it?

One of my buddies told me one time that you could roll your windows down and take out the fuse so they won't roll back up and thus the inspection people won't see the tint. I don't think you can fail inspection for your windows not working, i think they only give you a warning, but can anyone else confirm this theory?

well considering the light coming in the front windshield to match the back visually youd need 15% on the front 2.

you dont have to remove your tint.

i heard this as well when i first got 5% on my front 2. Youve actually got a couple of options.

1) Go to a rural inspection garage that doesnt have a light meter(weve got alot of those(country) about 15 min from here)im not sure if youd be able to find one where your at.

2) you can try your rolling the windows down thing and telling them their broken, they might buy it.

3) i suggest asking around to find a place that will inspect it by asking, "hey man, do you know where i could get my car inspected with tinted windows?" kind of hinting that their illegal and most people will help you out.

most places around NC you can just leave a $20 on the seat and they pass it once you find a place. But like i said try and find a back country inspection place.

good suggestions, money can get you anything. However, in dc, there is only ONE inspection station, run by the DMV. There used to be places for re-inspection if you failed at the dmv place but now you can only do it at that place. I don't know if they have light meters but i figured "broken windows" wouldnt be cause to fail inspection because inspection is for safety stuff. Like that guy on Pimp my Ride who had a pickup with only a cab, a drivers seat, brake lights and head lights, no doors or anything, there are only certain things you need and i feel like working windows isnt one of them.

one inspection station, that sucks! in NC you can get your car inspected at any gas station, DMV, or mechanics place, just about anywhere you bring your car.

If its DMV im pretty sure theyll have a light meter. It wouldnt hurt to call and ask if the windows being broken will fail inspection also.
