The cost and value of services
When I contract engineering hours, it's not just about the time I spend on site visits, analysis or design drawings. It's also about how long it took to generate the business, determine what they needed based on lengthy conversations, correspond with the client about my progress and bill for my services. My hourly rate reflects those costs.
The auto shop has similar expenses. The dealership has high advertising costs to get people in the door. They have to write up the service beforehand, write an invoice when it's done and process the payment later. They have to handle the clients car, put it on the rack and leave it clean when they're done. In this case the oil change was given free, or as part of the car sale. In other words, there are other costs to providing the service. If they also provide ambiance, TV, air conditioning and free coffee then that's a perk some people may value.
For air filters and car washes I prefer to do that myself. But I have paid for both in the past. I let the shop change the oil because I don't want to deal with catching and recycling the oil. While it's on their rack I ask them to check all of the fluids, even though I could do it myself. It's easier and a better use of my time to let them do it. I gladly pay for all of that service.
I was in southwestern Utah last week with the 1995 Jeep. The 4wheel drive switch was giving me a warning indicator. It was running fine but to be safe I stopped at a little station in a small rural town and asked the only mechanic I found to put the Jeep up on the rack and check all of the fluids. He was in the middle of installing a couple of tires for someone so I had to wait for a while. He was a nice gentleman, older than me, with the strong arms of a country mechanic and rancher. When he was done he asked for $15. I gave him a twenty and said, "Have a lunch on me". I knew he had to pay for his lift, his shop his tools and his time, not just an hourly rate for 15 minutes of work.

Does anyone know if Bosch has updated the part number for the cabin air filter, or if there's an equivalent aftermarket option?
Bosch P3502 Cabin Air Filter is no longer available. I can find the Wix Filter on summit, for a reasonable price, and the Toyota OEM is ridiculously expensive.
I'm nearing 50k miles and getting everything together to do my 50k service, just trying to find the best prices. Also, if anyone can beat $25 for 5 qt of 0w-20, let me know!

I did the same. seems like a no brainer to me... its not terribly expensive and washable. win win
it does make the car smell rubbery for a couple of weeks but it goes away.

I'm kind of in the same situation. Both me and the wife have 16 Toyota vehicle. Both have a "family plan" from the dealership that gives up free oil changes for life, as long as we have all the other factory recommended service done there. Her Camry just hit 30K miles and it was $110 for the 30K service which was engine and cabin air filters, rotate tires, oil and filter change etc.
At first I was going to not do it, but then I figured out how much I would be spending on Synthetic oil and filters for 3 oil changes, plus the cost of engine and cabin air filter ever 30K miles and it wound out being a wash since the V6 Camry takes 6 quarts of synthetic oil.
So I let them do the work and just accepted it as "paying" for the other 2 free oil changes I get in between 30K services. Plus I kind of like having the dealer having a record of everything that has been done to the cars.
I will probably go the same route with my 4Runner, but it depends on how much they want to charge to do the diffs and transfer case fluid changes. Looked it up here and doesn't look too difficult

I just order the Wix filter 24511 via Amzon, usually around $16 for the charcoal impregnated one. Only $1 more than the non-charcoal 24483. Amazon say it won't fit the truck, but got the numbers from Wix's website and never had any issues.

While everyone is on the topic of buying filters from Amazon. I too get my filters on Amazon. I have them on a subscribe and save feature that sends me a new cabin filter every 6 months I believe. Now I don't have to worry about thinking about changing it or buying a filter. Amazon will just automatically just charge my credit card and one will show up at my door and that will be my reminder to change it.
