Tire Advice

Hello All,
New guy here. Great forum with great advice. Hope this is the right section to post??

My brain is fried with all the back and forth from tire dealers about which is better. Currently I have the stock Dueller H/Ts 265-75/17. Initially I was looking at replacing with the BFG T/A KO's since lots of people seem to love them. Then I leaned toward getting a set of steelies and putting on winter treads - was told the BFG's were "All Weather" and not so good in slushy snow and satisfactory in the rain.

Unfortunately no one stocks this size here either so I am currently looking at putting dedicated winters on the steelies and saving up for the BFG's in the summer.

I guess the question is: How do the BFG's perform in slushy snow compared to dedicated winter treads? A tire that was suggested is the Cooper Discoverer(?) for an winter only tire.

I can't vouch for the Cooper Discoverers, but the BFGs I had on my Tacoma were the best tires ever. Rain, slush, mud, sand, dirt, no problem. Those are the only off road tires I have ever owned, so I may be a little biased. Just my 2 cents.

I just put on my 265 70 17 BFG A/T KOs this weekend. It poured all day yesterday and I spent the majority of the day driving in it.

Tires felt great, never had wheel slip of any kind and I was driving more aggressive than I usually do. I can't speak for any other conditions, but so far I am very happy with their performance.

BFG AT KOs are a solid choice. I have the coopers too, on my work/plow truck and they are pretty good too. I had Geolander ATs on my 3rd gen 4R, and didn't have to use 4wd much in the winter (until i had about 20kmi on em) but they are nice a grippy.

Ok this will probably start a war but personally and this is my own opinion and we all know what they say about those lol I do not like the BFG All Terrains I had them for about 10k miles and took them off (My old 4runner) I have had 2 sets of BFG mud terrains new and old I have also had 2 sets of Nitto Terra Grapplers the mud tires of course aren't the best in rain or ice but if you drive like a normal human they do just fine as for the Nittos I loved them would have got another set of those but wanted a more aggressive tire. I would personally like to try the Goodyear wrangler Duratrac those seem to get great reviews from all the members here on the forum. Get on tirerack and just read reviews for some of the tires you are looking at and hopefully that will help you out some.

I'm running Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10's with zero complaints after 10,000 miles. Good mannerisms on-road, quiet, good looks, and a nice price point.

I was a die-hard BF Goodrich AT fan and wanted to try something new. Its weird, but there are other good tires out there.

I have always had a Mud terrain tire, I'm running the BFG All Terrains currently because they were sold as a package deal with these wheels from a guy up in Glendale, CA.

So far I am pleased with them. Almost 1 in every 3-4 trucks/suvs down here in So-Cal seem to run them so they must be Great tires. I really miss the aggressiveness the mud's provided. They made any vehicle look 10 times better.

As far as snow goes, my mom has them on my old 88' 4Runner and they seemed fine when we drove up in Big Bear in January. Then again, so did my KM2's on my 08' Tacoma.

- Thanks for all the advice - got some decisions to make.

I may opt for a cheaper set of winters then splurge on some kind of beefier AT's. I saw a pick up last month that had the Nitto Grapplers - they looked awesome but I wasn't sure how they would look at 265 70/17. Probably won't go all in on MT tires...yet.... as this is also a family vehicle.

Any opinions of General tire Grabber AT2's?

They look good in 265/70/17 I have a picture of them in that size before I lifted mine and went 285's. But it is going to be cheaper to get at's now as you can probably get a trade allowance on your factory tires and this way no extra wheels or tpms. I will post a pic for you of the nittos if you want?

Hamilton: thanks - pix of the Nitto's at 265 would be great. Toyota said No to trade in on tires - no suprise there.

Try and see if a local shop will give you a credit on a trade if not with winter here craigslist they should sell quick on there if you price them reasonably. Here is a pic with the Nittos Terra Grapplers on stock rims and one on aftermarket rims.

How are they off road? how many miles so far?
