I run the dual setup. 2 cans, and a spare. If you're running a 33 I'd go with a jerry can or 2. I have one water one gas, and they both have come in handy. With the limited distance of the 4Runner tank it helps having the extra 5 gallons. I want to add another making it 3 total.
Also speaking of the weight difference, the weight actually seems to help with things bouncing. When the cans are empty i can hear the swinger bouncing more over little bumps during street driving compared to when they are both topped off. The bumper has been on my car for quite some time. I'd say at least 4 years and the spindle is still holding up. They only thing that has gone wrong was the support arm for the swinger cracked. But the new bumpers don't look like they come with them now.
Not sure if its to late for you, but one thing I wish mine had was a dual swing out. I talked to CBI about adding it and will eventually probably add it. It'd be nice too, to have the tire on the drivers side for those lane changes when you look over your right shoulder. Also I wish they had the option for the fold down table and light when I ordered mine. One other thing is if you plan on doing a body lift do it now and order the bumper for it.
But it really comes down to what you'll be using it for. I do a lot of camping, and road trips, so the extra fuel and water works for me.

I voted single jerry can holder. Not too busy, and you never know if you'll need it and wish you had it. Unless you're planning on a roof rack and just put a couple rotopax up there, or attach a rotopax to your spare tire i suppose.

This. If i ever feel the need to carry some extra fluids it will be with a Rotopax setup.

I think I'm eventually going to get a CBI rear bumper, and when I do I am going to get the dual jerry can holder. From my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the jerry can holder is removable when not in use. I mainly want the extra 10 gallons. The next cross country trip I go on will most likely be a drive to Alaska through Canada, so that extra fuel will give me extra peace of mind. Keep in mind, although everyone cares about how badass their truck looks including me, my rule of thumb is function over looks. Not to mention, I think the CBI looks pretty sweet with two jerry cans on the back. To say the least though, I would definitely want it to be removable so I'm not lugging that extra weight around all the time (for daily driving).

This. I wish I could change my vote from one jerry can to none, and then add rotopax somewhere, probably on the roof.

I love the look with or without the fuel can. If without gotta do a triangular centered design like Nate said. I went with a single, mainly bc they offered it for free in the different discount offers. I later custom added a secondary Rotopax mount to mount any of their different pax. I currently have a water and a fuel. You could prob do what nate said then do what I did with the Rotopax mount. Choice is yours, but congrats on the future purchase!

I ordered mine with a single can and I barely ever use it. However it's nice to have a spot to mount other things there. I mounted a cooler on mine. It gets a lot more use than the jerry can, but it's still nice to have the option of carrying gas if I go on longer trips or just out exploring.

I want to do this.. Did you just build a metal cage based on the cooler and attach it the same way you would the jerry can?

Exactly, I bought the cooler first and made the box around it. It attaches using the same bolts/holes as the jerry can holder. Only crappy thing is, I broke the handle off the cooler the 1st week and waited too long to but another one. I don't think this cooler is made any more now, lol. So my recommendation is buy at least 2 of the same cooler cuz they (the cooler makers) seem to like to put out new styles every year.

I want to make one for one the small Yeti coolers and come up with a durable strap down & locking system, rather than just putting a bungee on it. Obviously you know the spot is limited cus of the spare 35 so we'll see how it works out.

You'll have a little side to side room to work with depending on where you drill the mounting holes in the cooler holder. I still had 33s when we made the cooler holder, so I lucked out that it still fit with my 35 spare. I could always have redrilled the holes over an inch if I had to though.
The cooler fits very snugly in my holder, so the bungee cord is just to keep the lid down. It takes a strong pull to get it out of there when it's empty, so when it's full of ice and drinks, it will never come out unless I'm on my roof and then that's the least of my problems!
