Just installed my knucklebone made from the guys at DETOURSUSA.com

They specialize in JEEP products, but they were nice enough to custom fabricate this for my 5th gen.

Give them a call if you want something similar. I'm holding a 33" tire no problem.

I got mine for $270 including shipping.

Took about a month to fab and deliver, company is out of Colorado. He said normally ships faster but he was very busy when I ordered.

Wobble seems to be very minimal. Just a little left and right, no back and forth which is nice.

I would assume with a lighter set up it would probably wobble less, but the 33s and low cast steel rims I have are pretty heavy combo.

He said you can go as big as 42s depending on the lift of the truck.

Right now no other mounts for this one, but he has options on the website of other mounts that have hilifts and jerry cans attached.

I have my rhino rack up top for that gear, just didn't want to go through the hassle of the tire up there.

Look's good! Do you plan to paint it black, or are you just leaving it as is? Where/How do you plan to mount the LP? Thanks.

Thanks for the info...definitely a new option to consider and at a very reasonable price!
 
I plan on painting it ... not sure if black or darker gray.

Still figuring out where to mount the LP. Most likely on the spare, but I have found some brackets that work around the tire carrier ... just not sure of quality for that.

Any updates on this? How's it holding up?

Anyone else running this? Or specifically the "40 degree straight back drop" version?

I've had one on my jeep for a long time. Took it on a whole lot of offroad trips. Holds nicely.

I don't get this...what is the purpose?

Block the back window?....block the licence plate?....block the rear camera?...add an additional step of lifting or lowering an 80lb. tire and rim to access the rear area (which I do about 4-5 times a day?.......or (drumroll please)

to look like a total poser?

I fail see any benefit of this whatsoever... (unless your goal is to change your flat with your tux on)

I like the whole hitch idea. Why didn't you go with the Wilco? I would think a swing out arm is much more user friendly than a drop down.

- easy access spare
- easy to rotate full size spare along with all other tires (kind of a PITA to lower and raise all the time).
- some of these have added storage for Jerry cans, jacks, etc, like the Wilco also mentioned in this thread. https://www.wilcooffroad.com/shop/hitchgate-tire-carrier-toyota/
- Looks better (IMO)
- Can use a trasharoo while out in the field
- To piss people like you off
- Can fit an oversized spare
- People don't want to spend $2500 on a bumper with a swing out
 
My main reason for purchasing one was that I have drug my spare tire on rocks and other things in the stock location. I have taken chunks out of the back of my spare rim and am nervous about cutting the sidewall of the spare tire. But I'm not in a situation to where I can drop $2k+ on a full replacement bumper.

This is a solid system with good customer service. He manufactures them all inhouse and even makes license plate brackets with LEDs on it. For the price you can't beat it. Especially when putting it on your roof or in the cab is not an option.
