Tire clearance w/ Limited flares?

I just picked up a '98 Limited. The previous owner made a bit of a mall cruiser out of it, with 285/70-17 on FJ 17" wheels... I plan on doing a 2-3" coil over lift and running something equivalent to a 33" tire, maybe even slightly taller.

The previous owner fit the 285 tires on with minimal trimming to the inside of the side runner steps, very cleanly done, and is nearly unnoticeable from the exterior of the vehicle. However, I plan to remove the side runners completely.

Question is, are the Limited flares more restrictive on tire clearance than the slimmer SR5 flares?

What size tires can I fit with a 2-3" lift? Should a little body lift be added to clear tires as well?

Back spacing, or wheel spacers?

Ive even thought about something closer to a 35" tire down the road, maybe when I have the time and funds for a gear swap. Any insight on what's needed to run that?

well I have approximately 2 to 2 1/2 inchs of suspension lift with one inch of body lift and I am running 285/75/16 which rub some times at full lock and compressed. so for you to be running that size tire you have to have some lift?! pic help too!!!!! but I am getting ready to get new rear suspension and new tires so I have been contemplating doing the old man emu rear so i have a full 3 inches in the rear and in the front I have coilovers so I can just turn them too match the front!!!! but I was hoping to do like a 34 or 35 but like 12 inch wide!! I do not have unlimited funds so my only concern is not regearing it! So if anyone has any info on that size tire with stock gears please chime in!!! I am not sure on my wheel backspacing but i am running spider track spacers

I have 3 inch lift and 1.5 inch body lift and with 35's I had to cut into the firewall and weld in patch panels in order to not rub at full stuff. It's a lot of work. 285s look pretty darn good on the 4runners

what about the gearing???
