Tire debate

I am debating on which size tire to purchase for my 1987 4runner. I have decided that I am going to give treadwrights a try and have narrowed it down to 265/75/16 guard dogs or the 235/85/16's Crawlers. What are your guys thoughts on the two sizes? I have yet to see a first gen with the 235/85's; but I know they are popular in Europe. The rig will mainly be used as a camping/around town rig/light wheeler. I have 1.5 BJ spacers up front and old man emu cs009r leafs in the rear. Input? Pictures? Thanks

I liked the 235/85/16s on my 6400# Dodge 2500 because I wanted to get down to the solid stuff for traction. There was no chance that truck was ever going to 'float' over anything.

However, the 4Runner isn't much more than half the Ram's curb weight and very likely can float over softer surfaces, giving the advantage to the wider 265/75/16s. Of course, the 235/85/16s might be plenty to keep the Toyota from sinking in, particularly once aired down.

I'd very much like to see the 1st Gen with 235/85/16s.
 
I'm on 245/75r16s, and they're too skinny for me, I don't get near as much traction on loose surfaces or rock as I'd like. I'll be going to 265/75s when I next buy tires.
 
whats with all these crazy numbers? Last time i checked tires should say 40x**.**xR** crazy guys and your crazy metric system. Ok... im kidding. To be honest i don't know? The biggest meat you can fit without rubbing? The smallest tire i ever bought was a 35x12.5.

im with nate WTF the truck came stock with 15 inch wheels how and why did you get 16's
any way 31x10.50x15 is all the bigger you should go if you dont regear youll be asking for damage.
275/65/16 i think is the confusable scale
 
Thanks for the input; I am running 16 inch rims because that is what I have currently on the rig, hence my original question. 235/85/16 vs 265/75/16 pros, cons, pictures, experience with either, etc.

Hah!

I have two sets of identical Toyota alloy wheels..on in 15" dia and the other 16" dia.
 
stock 4.10 or 4.30 gearing stick with 31" max dia. and if you do a ton of on-road driving, a 10.5 or 11.5" wide tire will drive much better than a wider rubber. i like 31x10.5 for a stocker.

you're referring to if you have a manual I'm guessing. I have an auto with 4.88s and run 31s. I'd like to move up to a 32 or a 33 preferably. I'd like to have my cake and eat it too in that I don't want to regear, but oh well.

Yes,
My experience is definitely based off of manual tranny, but i have buds with autos and their gearing is typically close to mine. I would think 4.88 and 33"s would be a good match on an auto, maybe a little underpower, but perfect with a manual..
 
I'm running 33x10.5r15 bfg a/t with stock gearing (manual trans). It is fine on the road, not too bad on power (lots of engine mods though). However, trail riding I find myself in 4low much more often than i would like to be.

4.88s with a stick will get you back to stock, but if i upgrade gears i think 5.29s with be the path i take.

I am really leaning towards the 235/85/r16's; this is essentially a little smaller than a 32, but a little more narrow than say a 31x10.5 anyone think the 22re and stock gears would struggle? The weight is comparable to the 31's. Thoughts?

What gears do you have now? If your truck came with 31s you should be good. If not, you'll be sluggish from a stop and struggle on hills.
