Does the metalic cap on the tire pressure sensor serve any additional purpose? Like antena extension, signal grounding, ...etc?

Some smuck stole all my caps and the sensors still worked fine. Not a very technical response but at a high level, they don't seem to effect the sensor's operation.
I'm actually concerned that they're not plastic.
Honda used metallic caps on many of their 2006 model year vehicles, but then replaced them all with plastic ones after they found that the road salt used in winter climates caused the caps to corrode and get stuck.
How long has Toyota used metallic caps with the 4Runner? Has anyone had problems like Honda experienced?

I'm using plastic caps for the reasons mentioned aboved (theft, more importantly seizing), but it came with silver metal (probably aluminum) caps. I haven't had the TPMS light come on, so I don't think the metal cap serve any purpose other than look nicer since the valve stem has silver nut that secures it to the rim.
When I went with my friend to pick up his '07 4R, all the cars on the dealer lots had black plastic caps. Toyota has used the silver metal caps in the past pre-2007. There is a thread where a member mentioned he had trouble getting the metal cap off and had to take a pair of pliers to it.

Yup, you'll want to switch them ASAP to plastic caps. The one on my spare was stuck. I was trying to fill it up because the tpms light came on but the cap was siezed tight. Luckily I had a pair of pliers in the truck and I was able to mangle the cap off. I later drove to pep boys and picked up a set of metal caps with plastic threads and haven't had a problem since.

What year and which models came with the Tire pressure monitor sensor? I am getting a set of sport wheels from a member here and I was just wondering if the wheels come with the sensor can I get the other parts that show the presure warning light. Any advice....
