Tire Question!

So 2 weeks in to owning my first 2010 4R Limited, I get a nail through the sidewall of the tire...irreparable! :(

I bought the car used, and the tires are running at about 6/32...

For the time being I have the spare on the front right (where the nail was) and it is basically brand new (10/32)...

Now to the question! Since this is my first AWD car, and I am now living in an area with semi-extreme winter climate commuting to the city of Fresno, CA (no extreme weather, just HOT in the summer!), what would be the best way to go?

Should I replace all 4 tires and see if I can ship off the used 6/32's? Should I replace just two tires (new 2 on front or back?)? I'm totally lost and don't want to get bludgeoned by the tire shop.

Also, if you have any input on well rounded tires that won't cost me an arm and a leg I'd be totally open to suggestion. I hate the look of the OEM Yokohama Geolanders and would like something that look a bit "beefier" if possible, without giving me too much of a decrease in mileage since I'm commuting 100 miles a day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated for the n00b over here! Thanks guys :rockon:

(THIS IS IMO) WITH AWD I WOULD GET 4 IF ITS ALLTIME AWD YOU COULD RUIN YOUR DRIVE LINE, EVEN THOUGH YOU WOULD HAVE THE SAME TREAD LIFE ON THAT AXLE.
IT'D BE LIKE HAVING A THICK SNEAKER ON ONE FOOT AND FLIP FLOP ON THE OTHER. THAT WOULD HURT YOU IN THE LONG RUN. GET 4 NEW

Thank you kind sir! I was thinking along the same lines as you with replacing all 4...it just sucks that one little nail can result in breaking the bank in this case :/. Have you had any experience selling used tires to a tire shop? Or anywhere else for that matter? I took a look at the Nitto Crossteks, sadly they don't fit the rims on the 2010 LE!
 
Looking on tirerack.com there are not a lot of options in your OEM tire size of 245/60/20. It has a 31.6" overall diameter.

Playing around with their search tool shows quite a few at the 275/55/20 size but I don't know if those would fit. I think the overall diameter is pretty close. The potential issue is the width. You could try a search here to see if others are running that size on a 2010.

From the available choices on Tire Rack, I would probably go with this one:
BFG Rugged Trail TA
It has a 31.9" overall diameter and a 50,000 mile warranty.

Most shops like America's Tire will match the "shipped" price from TR. So it's a good place to get general info even if you don't buy online.

Those BFG Ruggeds look sweet. Thanks for the links man...I am coming to find rather quickly that with the Limited, you are LIMITED with tire purchases...it's pretty damn annoying that one little nail can screw me over like this!
 
Goodyear Eagle LS-2 : 275/55/20

I've been chatting with [MENTION=83083]rigtec[/MENTION] about 275/55/20s. He's running Goodyear Eagle LS-2s at 275/55/20 and loves them.

I found them online at OnlineTires.com for $126 each. Four tires would run $506 plus shipping ($80 to Texas). If you're near Cerritos, CA, you can pick them up and save the shipping charge.

I'm planning on picking up a set of four with my next paycheck. Actually, I'm hoping that Discount Tire will match the price if I add $20 to each tire to cover the shipping charge. I figure $146 per tire is still a great price.

ETA: I just checked Tire Rack, and they have the Goodyear Eagle LS-2s for $143 each, or $572 for a set of four plus shipping. To Texas, shipping would be $110!!

Just for fun:

The 275mm width tire sizes are not recommended for the rim width of the stock LE rim - they're too wide. Been a lot of debate back and forth, no clear answer. You should evaluate for your self before you buy a set of tires.

The LE offers some nice pluses, but the factory rims suck! Buy some decent 17" rims - factory rims or aftermarket and enjoy the wonderful world of tire choices that isn't limited to the rim width that Toyota needs to keep their corporate CAFE avg up.

As stated above, just get 4 new tires. If you just get 2 now, you will always be out of sinc when you have to buy tires again. May as well just start fresh. You might be able to Craigslist the other tires for a little cash.

I dont know much about the Rugged Trail, but I do know that they have come stock on a few vehicles and they quickly earned the name "Rugged Fail". Personally I would look elsewhere. There is another BFG product called the Rugged Terrain which is supposed to be much better. Try going on discounttiredirect.com and mess around with sizing. 275/55/20 brings up a bunch of options and Im sure some searching would bring up what sizing fits without issue. Good luck!
 
Dump the rims, dude. I was thinking about buying a Limited and that was *definitely* something I was planning on doing at the first tire change.

You're just so... limited with the 20s.

I would drive it as is for a bit longer and find some OEM SR5 or Trail wheels, or something aftermarket you like, and then hit up Costco if you're sticking with the stock size tire on the 17. Costco carries BFG ATs, Bridgestone Revo IIs, Michelins, etc.
 
right... lets think about this.....
you live in oakhurst thats a LOT OF MOFO snow and ice. buy you self a set of studded snow tires and chains for the back. odds are your going to bump into a time where CHP makes you have the chains on anyways.... check out general snow tires or hankook snow tires cheaper then the big names with the same if not better proformace ... I have run both they are great. then next spring slap a set of all seasons or a nice AT on there, check out the Hankook Danapro ATM for one of the most under rated and best priced tires out there, also check out the cooper AT# or if you want to spend lots of money and look cool and lose MPG and miles on a set of tires but go just about anywhere check out the duratracks...... the yokohama ATS is another nice 50/50 AT
 
I'd consider replacing your wheels with either the SR5 17 inch wheels and installing Firestone Destination ATs (not a fancy tire...but very very good!). I used to have REVO IIs, which I got a lot of miles out of (almost 70k...I replaced OEM tires right after buying mine). But, they were never super smooth.

Another option is to replace your 20s with the 17 inch wheels from the 4runner Trail, which look terrific.

Either way, going with 17s would be much easier to live with.
 
Disagree on studded snows. I grew up in the Foothills at the same elevation as Oakhurst, but significantly farther north. It just straight doesn't snow there that much and ice is very rarely a significant issue too. A good AT tire is all you need.

Chains aren't a bad idea being so close to Yosemite. NPS is way harder core about checking for chains than CHP. (You're technically supposed to carry them even though they shut down the highway before they require chains on 4WD vehicles.)
 
So I am looking in to getting some new rims, and wondering if I may be able to trade the OEM's in at time of purchase to help out with the dent that'll be incurred by the purchase of new rims and tires! Are 17's the most versatile size in terms of tire availability after install? And what do you think I should get for the OEM rims? I've looked online and seen a variety of different prices for them, obviously based on condition of the rim.
 
Put nitto terra grapplers on the stock rims and you"ll be good to go. Search a little and you will find interesting discussions and pics for these tires. Keep in mind that you will have to purchase or move your TPMS if you go with after market wheels.

You'll dramatically change the look with the wider AT and not have much of a mpg hit, if any. Consider this a great opportunity to get some good rubber for summer through winter and off road. I love my limited 20s. I run Blizzaks all year in the wider size and love them, but that's not recommended with a 100 mile commute. I have Duratracs on the FJ and love those too. I would install the terra grapplers on my limited if I were a commuter.

Can't help on rims pricing - without a doubt, the 17" rim will give you the widest possible tire selection and generally speaking slightly cheaper comparably sized tires. Go to Tire Rack website and pick your tires by entering your vehicle, then try it again but tell the website you have a SR5 or TE (both TE and SR5 come w/ 17" rims) instead of a Limited and compare the tire availability. If you decide to upsize to the popular 285/70R17 instead of the factory 265/70R17 there are nearly as many options to pick from. Additionally the 17" rim offers substantially better off road performance vs the 20" rim.

Thanks John, I'm definitely going to look into these today. The goal is to have new rubbers by the end of the week. These tires look pretty sweet, time to do some research and make sure they'll fit! After much thought and discussion (with my better half), I've decided I just need to get some rubbers now, and decide on the wheels a little down the road as the whole selling/buying of my wheels may take a while! Anyways, thank you for the advice, I'm going to check these out today :)

In running a quick check on their website, it doesn't seem they carry the 245 60r20, are you suggesting a 275 55r20 setup?
