Tire Question

So, I bought a stock 85 4Runner and have a zillion questions I want to do a full restore and upgrade a lot of stuff but not build a rock crawler fully off road truck. I want it to be better off road then stock but will want to drive the road a lot as well. I figure it'll be an 80/20 vehicle but the 20 percent off road I want it stout will more capability then stock.

Question is: What is the largest tire you suggest putting on vehicle if I lift it 2 inches but still want it to be a road vehicle?

What's on it now? I had 32x11.50 on mine stock height on a 10" rim and they rubbed but 2" would of been enough to clear. I'd say 32's or 33's.

33s with 2" of lift. You will need to swap to 4.88 gears tho. If u just stick to 31s then u won't need to re-gear or lift.

I've got 31x10.50s on the stock 15's right now and they do pretty good on and off road, good thing is you can keep stock gearing and height (not sure if you planned on that or not), but next set im going to 32x11.50s. No lift or anything, and no reason honestly other than I just like how they make the truck look a little more stout without getting the over-compensating huge lift and huge tires/wheels that seem to be very popular in my area. I've always loved the look of a stock height truck with bigger, but not too much bigger, than stock tires. However mine is a 2nd gen 1992 model, I'm not too familiar with 1st gens as this is my first 4Runner I've owned myself

Thx for reply and hello There is a question I had too about the gears. I need to learn more about that. I owned a 93 Tacoma xcab 4x4 P U but sold when kids got bigger. I need to learn more about this vehicle, its potential, and what I want to do. I will have lots of stupid questions but before I ask them I will read the forums and learn what I can.

SO will the 31s make it look 'beefy' with the lift?

Ok thx for the reply. I have lots to learn about the 85 1st gen but that's what I got into for I am learning and poking around currently.

My truck in my signature has 31/10.50s on it if that helps

My use is similar to yours and I have 31 x 10.5 goodyear duratraks on a 2" OME suspension lift and I'm very happy with that.

Choice in tire size is going to depend in part on if you plan on regarding the diffs. With a 3 in lift you could fit 33s on but power and mpg will suffer. 31 in tires will fit with no lift and you can get away without regearing.

This is 31x10.5 tires on a 4runner with no lift in the front, and a 2" add-a-leaf kit in the rear. Front valance has been removed, which can also give the illusion of a "lift". 31x10.5 x 15 is significantly larger than the stock 225/75 R15s that come factory. This is an IFS though so I believe the wheels and tires sit a bit farther outward from the fender than an 85.
