Ive got the Michelins, so far so good. Bought them used but they are great tires and last forever. I dont care for the BFG A/T's , they SUCK in the rain (flipped a dodge ram 5 times end over end - lost traction in a curve with those tires) Never had the Toyo's but i think the Grapplers are one of the best looking tires in an all terrain

Maybe you were just going too fast?? Any time you purchase a true all terrain tire like the BFGs, you sacrifice wet onroad traction. The best is just your standard all season tire, but i take the risk because i like tires to look a bit more aggressive.

dont know but the tread looks like a golf cart tire to me anyways, Nittos much more aggressive- my .02

maybe you are thinking about the BFG long trail tires?? the A/Ts are about the most aggressive all terrain tire on the market. I like the Terragrapplers, but i dont see them being more aggressive than the BFG A/T
 
LOL, i know exactly what a BFG A/T is and if you google search youll see how many people agree that they are terrible in the rain. I just dont like the tread pattern compared to some of the other guys

The BFG looks more rugged to me. I don't have ties to either one.

I would like to know though do the BFG's really stink in rain?
 
i had 32 11.50 r15's bfg ats on my last 4runner and i ran 70-75 in the rain with no problems. tried the toyos on my neww one cause they were cheaper and look ok. but both are good just bfg's went out of sight on price. pic isnt 3rd gen but gives idea on tire.

As i stated earlier, any A/T tire isnt going to perform best in the rain. It is made more for mud, rock, snow. If you are looking for optimum traction in the rain ANY A/T tire isnt for you. You will need a standard ALL SEASON TIRE. Of course, the looks of the tire is a matter of opinion anyways. I think i also stated earlier that i like the Nittos also(those were my second choice) but opted for the BFG. I have owned several vehicles that had the BFG A/Ts on them, so i know their characteristics, and looks.

BTW, i see that you are running an all season Michelin tire on your truck now. If you are worried about traction in the rain, you may want to stick with them.

Yeah we don't have mud or any vegetation here in Arizona, just sand nothing else. Come on, get that thing dirty it won't hurt it.
 
My .02... I ran the Pro-Comp A-T's on a 91 chevy 1500(short bed 350-5spd) and had great luck with them even in the rain. The most important thing is to look at YOUR main usage..mostly highway from what you are saying so you will want something with good treadwear warranty, something semi-aggressive and then price...looks are nice but always take function and budget over looks. Now that being said I have the Michelins LTX radials that came on my Runner when I bought it in the summer and I love them, my wife's van just went 110K with a set of Michelin LTX radials so treadwear is good on them. Still debating like everyone else on here as to what tire I will go with when I upgrade since I do off-road frequently and the All-seasons I have now wont meet my needs.

well just my luck, my old BFG Rugged Trails were slashed, and I had no cash, so I had to go for a cheap tire. I got Goodyear Wrangler RT/S's for 94 bucks each... went on my card. It was 204 a tire for BFG AT's and 171 for BFG Rugged Trails... so instead of upgrading I went down.


ahh man that sucks. I guess I will know next time.

So you're saying I cna run a 265/75R/16 without rubbing on my '01 at stock ride height?:biggrin2:
 
whipkiller-Yes. As far as I know all 3rd Gens are able to fit 265/75/R16. Some '99's have taller springs, but I don't think they can fit any larger of a tire.

Thanks for the info bootown. I don't know when I'll be getting new tires, soon would be cool, but I'm trying to leran all about the popular ones. As much as I want a really aggressive look I really need something that preforms well in the rain, as that is mostly what we see in SC. I don't really offroad either.

I think I'll probably go with an AT though. I've heard pretty good things about the Nitto Terra Grappler. Apparently it is really good in snow, bad in mud (like all ATs), decent in the rain, and pretty good for other off roading.

Anybody have a stock height Runner sitting on 265/75R/16 A/T type tire, and if so can you post pix so I can see what mine would look like?

If someone has a Thundercloud Metallic SR5 on Toyo Open Country A/T's that would be swell.

The brown stuff you see in this picture is part of the reason I want a little more flotation & traction.
