Tire Recommendation - yet another post

First off I want to say that I have spent the amount of a work day trying to find answers before posting. I wanted to say this before the forum :police: get worked up :D.

I currently have the stock limited wheels and tires. Both are going to be taken off.

(WHEELS) I have decided to go with wither the Procomps 7098 or the V-tech 326 off road.
that's the easy part.

(WHEEL SIZE) The hard part is now trying to decide on if I should get 17"s or 20"s. I remember reading that for on road handling (most of our driving) 20"s will handle a little better and have better gas millage. 17"s will have more sidewall > better for off road.

(20"S)Even more confusing is the AT tire selection. If I get 20"s, as you all know the options are not in abundance. I really like the Cooper Discover ATP's, but they are in 275/60R20 and not the size I should get, which is 275/55R20.

Does anyone have this size and have any complaints. Further more, what danger would I be facing if I go with this size or other potential problems?

If i go with 17"s, I have a lot of options.


(NEEDS) Here is what I would like out of the tires:

  • Good road manners/handling.
  • Descent off road capabilities.
  • IDK what the difference in load rating means? I don't towe yet, but will most likely never tow more than 2 jet skies.
  • Newborn on the way!! Need safety.

Looks are a little important but not top priority.


I respect all members on this forum and appreciate all the feedback, advice and most importantly your patience..

I would then go with the 20's and the Cooper A/T3's in the 275/55-20 size. You will not be disappointed... :D

20's will not be more efficent than 17's necessarily. Depends on weight of tire and rim and rolling resistance of tire. Some 17's will be better than some 20's in this instance. I much prefer the ride of 17's vs. 20's. Softer over high speed bumps.

What about actual tires for my needs? Any recommendations? I know you have the AT3's and enjoy them. Would you consider the ATP's instead?

Safety is a graduated scale, of course, but the safest tire would be P-metric (same thing as Standard Load - SL) with cap ply construction (steel belt reinforcement, usually nylon). Many tires these days are constructed this way (used to be only H speed rated and higher) and there are various ways to determine it but, to me, there's nothing like getting it firsthand by emailing the company.

That makes shopping difficult, though. On Tire Rack the description often sounds like this, "belts are reinforced with spirally wound nylon". On the tire itself it is listed as tread ply material looking something like this:

Plies: Tread: 2 Polyester 2 Steel 1 Nylon
Sidewall: 2 Polyester

I am saving this thread b/c i will be in the same boat soon too. Love the 20'' rims on my truck but the tire options are piss poor. Thanks for making this a new thread.

Absolutely. Truth is there are many good AT tires out there in the 17" size and not so many in 20" size. Almost every manufacturer makes a good AT tire and for me to tell you one is better than the other is nonsense. I personally looked at the reliability, durability and remembered what I was going to use them for with cost being the last item to consider. I needed a good AT tire for short, mainly muddy off road excursions, a good snow tire and a good tire for highway, hence AT type tires. Firestone, Bridgestone, Michelin and many others have good tires. Using a site like Tire Rack is good as it gives you scores for specific conditions. Spend some time there. I would go with 17's though so you open up your choices considerably.

I've run the TG before and they were a lot less noisy than the Duratracs and BFG ATs. Mine did last a long time too (sold @ 55k with 6/16ths remaining, load range D on a Frontier for reference).

They are MB TKO's .. Pretty cheap for 20's @ Discount tires.
