tire size for better mpg

Just make sure, no matter what size tire you get, that you pump them up! I usually go 5-10psi over what the manufacturer says in the glove box/owners manual/door jam, but no more than the tire rating. The only reason for the car limit is for comfort, more so than safety, so maintaining within tire spec is of more importance. If you have aftermarket parts like shocks and whatnot, the OEM is of even less importance.

There is a point where pumping them up will cause worst gas mileage, but you will have to experiment with that (just do 5psi changes over the course of a few tanks to see what you get).

I don't recall what you said most f your driving was. City, highway, dirt roads?

Or you can do a chalk test to figure a good psi

I actually hadn't heard about that before, but it is an interesting way of testing. Have you done it before?

I do them on my BMW. Did one this morning actually. Easy as can be. Do a chalk line across the whole tread, roll it back and forth a few times and read the chalk. All gone, you're good. Only gone in the middle, over inflated. Only
Gone on the edges, under inflated. Only gone on one edge, you need an alignment.

lol.

I 2nd the 245/75r16 option, I ran those on an all factory 98 4runner for a few years. looked as normal as the rest of them, and consistently got 22-23mpg.

I would be somewhat worried about reduced breaking capacity, as now you're contact patch with the ground is reduced. Especially for those who've upgrades to 231mm Tundra brakes, since those can easily lock up stock size tires anyways.

a. OP is all stock
b. I have this size on my 2006 dc tacoma. consistently gets 22mpg.
c. A 3rd gen 4runner locking up the brakes!?! ha! i'm calling bs. the ABS system is way to maniacal for that kind of shenanigan.
Besides, that's the whole point; reducing the contact patch = better mileage.
