Tire size help needed!

I have a '98 4Runner 4x4. I'm wanting to put a 2-3" body lift on it. With a 2" lift what is the biggest tire size tire I can put on it without doing extra mods and it looking goofy? What about with a three inch lift?

You need to do some searching...

First, tire sizes have been discussed to death, search it. The biggest tires you can fit under with 2-3in of lift are going to be quite expensive, so do your homework first before spending that kind of money.

Second, 2-3in body lift requires alot of extra work as you need to modify the steering shaft (long extension), some of the harnesses won't reach, some hoses may need to be lengthened, you need to drop your radiator, you need to extend your shift levers... get the idea? This is why the vast majority of people only do 1-1.5" of BL. Again, do your homework, this information is VERY easy to find with google.

Thirdly, this is going to give you a gigantic gap between your body and bumper. Have you seen the pics of guys with BL's that snapped pics of their bumper gaps. Obviously not since you haven't searched it.

Not meaning to be snarky, but you just asked a big, uninformed question as your first post here. It is better to introduce yourself, read a bit, do your own research first, then ask your big questions.

I agree on the search comment.
Lots of questions:
Is the only reason for putting on a BL for bigger tires?
Are you doing any off road activities?
Is your 4Runner a limited or SR5?
What size wheels do you have? 15" or 16"...
If you have 16"s, 265/75/16's will fit without any lift but you may get some slight rubbing on on full turn and suspension compression (depends on the flares). With a 2 inch you might get 285/75/16s on it but then you run into rubbing issues on the upper control arm (depending on the rims you have) which may require wheel spacers (which is an extra mod). It would be better to run a 1" BL. Then 265/75/16 tires would do and the gap between frame and body would not be too bad. A 3" lift (do you mean BL?) would probably look "goofy" and the gap between bumper/body and frame would be very noticeable. The more specific information you post on what you already have helps get you a better answer.

Dang. Im using this site as a way to help me do research on what I need to do not a social site. I know I need research, which I'm doing but I thought I'd get opinions from people who would know as well. Not "snarky" remarks because I'm not going about my business how you think I need to. I know I'll need extra mods for whatever lift I do I'm talking strictly about the tires. So thank you to Running4life for just helpin a brother out. My Runner is an SR5, with 16" wheels, I do off road, and I also like the look of bigger tires and a lift, but mainly want to enhance off roading.

I'd look into a suspension lift. you might spend a few more bucks but it will be a much easier install and will handle a lot better. a body lift will raise your center of gravity while not improving offroad capability any, and the only clearance you will gain is at the bumpers.

you can run a 265/75/16 with no lift. I'm running this size on a 2" lift and it looks good. you can squeeze a 285 but it will require cutting and possibly a re-gear.

Your welcome. Based on that information probably best to do a 1-1.5" BL and 265's. You would get some more ground clearance and can choose AT or Mud Tire whichever you prefer. No other mods would be needed. I have thought many times about a 1" BL but am going to do the suspension instead.
Or you could do a 2" BL or higher and get 255/85/16 tires which would be like 33x10.50'sx15s. That would give you the cookie cutter look others mention and they shouldn't rub the UCA's. That should get you over the river/mountains and through the woods/mud in TN or NC whichever one you wheel in. Here is a pick of mine stock suspension, no BL on 265's.

I thought I'd get opinions from people who would know as well.

Well, sorry you are offended, but you asked for opinions.

Try to see your FIRST POST here as we see it. Some newb (assumed since you didn't introduce yourself and tell us your experience level) comes in saying he is going to do a big mod that is not very common (1" is common, 3" is not), because he wants to run bigger tires (common desire among mall crawlers and high school kids). Most of us will steer this person away from doing it because they are more than likely getting in over their head.

You said in your first post that you don't want to have to do "extra mods". This is why I assumed you didn't realize how many "extra mods" you will have to do to fit 2-3" of body lift instead of just the 1" lift.

Definitely use this site for research, but research isn't just asking questions that have been answered a million times. Give us a little information, say hi, introduce yourself. This isn't ask jeeves.

Since you gave some additional information in your second post, here is some more opinion. Most guys here will tell you that if you are looking to improve off road capability, then a BL with bigger tires isn't really going to help you (someone else already did in fact). You should first get a suspension lift, but don't believe me, here is a post from a guy that does off-roading for his job.

Anyway, do what you want, but if you tell us you are doing a 3" BL and big tires for off-road capability, then we are going to assume you are just trolling.

Good to hear you're considering a body lift first.

But as the other guys are mentioning, there are a lot of things to consider.

I highly recommend Mr Roger Brown and 4Crawler.com website. You will start to get an idea of all the complications the higher you lift.

Id stick to a 2" body lift, you can get it on there without having any major issues. I couldn't imagine doing a 3" though...

4Crawler makes a solid kit. Get the ultimate lift blocks, with a steering extension, and front bumper bracket and you'll be good to go.
