Tire Up-Sizing On OEM Wheels.....Thoughts on GY WRanglers?

Tire Up-Sizing On OEM Wheels w/Out Rubbing.....GY? BFG?

I have an 08 Sport and I'm going to up-size my tires to 265/70R17's. I have done a fair amount of reading here on doing this without spacers or a lift and it appears that this up-size isn't a problem. Going bigger/taller than 265/70R17 seems to be where the trimming/lift issue comes in to play.

I have read that some BFG tires are more square and blocky in their profile, which could potentially cause some rubbing during hard turns and such. I'm trying to avoid that all together.

These Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac's are what I have my eye on.

Do any of you more experienced guys see any reason these wouldn't be a good choice?

Given a perfect world, I'd probably rather get BFG T/A KO's...

But I don't want to order tires that end up rubbing. Any thoughts are definitely appreciated.

Both tires are great choices, and I don't think you should have any major problems with rubbing. If your spending that much money on tires, go with the ones you want. From my experience with BFG (KM's) being that they are more square there is a slight increase in the chance that there going to rub. But the fix is easy, remove some mud flaps or maybe move the fender liner forward. Easy fix. Worst case scenario you might have to trim a little of the fender, but its easy to do too.

My hope is that I can just order tires that flat out fit. I would imagine moving the liner in the wheel-well wouldn't be too much of a hassle, but I honestly have no idea how that gets done.

I did grab a couple of photos that I believe are of BFG's on OEM wheels, without a lift. If my memory serves me correctly they fit fine without modification to anything. Though I'm not sure the differences between one years T4R's wheel well clearance from anothers. I'm guessing they have changed somewhat. See below:

The GY Wranglers pictured above seem to get great reviews....so I'm up in the air as to wich would be better. Maybe that's just splitting hairs at this point.

Here's a picture of the GY Wranglers, but their on a new T4R. This one has no lift, no mods and it's wearing the GY's in 265/70r/17. Wonder if they'd fit my 08 Sport that well?

I like the look o both 4th gens above. But I think they both have a leveling kit on them (to get the front up)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It just looks like too much clearance between tire and FRONT fender.

Yes, couldn't quote exactly what those trucks have done, but I remember reading the build threads on those, and they both have a lift.

Truck 1 & 3 definitely do not have lifts. I'm almost as sure about truck 2, but can't recall.

Based solely on looks I would swear that trucks 1 & 2 have leveling kits, 3 does look stock to me though. Not saying you're wrong, just how it looks.

5POINT56: This should help on truck 2. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/54309-06-sport-daystar-lift.html#post444092

This should clear up truck 1 (gaterose). It's got FJ springs and bilstein 5100's now, but at the time had the FJ springs with toytec spacers and spidertraxx. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/68031-gaterose-build-thread-3.html#post599619

Definitely agree that truck 3 is stock height.

5point, if u are referring to the white truck not having a lift, it does, the 4rdan is right.

I installed duratracs 265/75/16 on stock rims no lift.only rubbed in reverse with steering wheel turned all the way to either side. then installed 2/3 readylift no rubbing at all. as far as one tire vs the other iv oned both .g/y are quieter and last longer.iv had g/y for 2yrs now and put 45k miles on them and they still have plenty of tread left best tires iv ever owned

I had 265-75-16 BFG AT's on my 4runner and loved them. No rubbing at all that I ever encountered. I now have the GY Duratracs on my 80 and I would have to say i made the right choice to switch to the duratracs. They are a little more aggressive on the sidewall than I would normally go for but overall, they are great. They get better ice and snow ratings if that matters to you. It did to me seeing as I live in Maine. The 14" of snow last week was barely noticed by the duratracs. I was playing around breaking a trail around the house and there was no spinning at all.

Will dealerships install a lift?

:nono: Ive never heard of a dealership installing an aftermarket suspension kit. They dont want the responsibility or blame if anything is affected by the lift. Occasionally they do install if the dealership offers a lift kit with a package, like the Tundra a couple years back as well as the Titan with the NO FEAR package. In those two occasions, all the suspension components were covered under the factory warranty as well. Im sure you have plenty of local shops capable and trustworthy in your area.

My vote, go for the lift. :bigok: I have 265/70/17's with no lift and no rubbing but cant wait to put the Toytec spacers on! Imo, 4th gens need at least a leveling kit to have a nice stance.

Looks like from this thread, BFG A/T KO's in 265/70/17 will fit without a lift.

Yes they will fit. It is roughly one inch larger diameter (small variance depending if you got 265 65 R17's or 265 70R16's) Its a little over 3% gain in diameter. I have personally seen these tires on a stock '07 2WD. I thought of getting these size tires too but decided not to (this is why I know the numbers....tire calculator online). They can/will rub when wheel is turned and under moderate to high suspension flex but have read posts that did a little fender-well and mud flap trimming to solve it. They are the same width so they shouldn't mess with the suspension components (like UCA's) 60mph on the speedo turns into 58mph when doing this tire change (although the car would be going 60mph still) but this also means 1000 miles on the car is only 970 on the odometer

OP are you sure thats the tires on those 4th gens you posted? They look to be (at least) 275 75 R17's....maybe 285's.
