Tires, Tires, Tires...Help Me Decide

km2's SUCK where I live.
They chunk easy, and offer no grip on lava...but thats just where I live, in Hawaii.

I'd say duratracs. I've heard nothing but great reviews on um, they're an aggressive looking A/T, should definitely last long, and a better price. I dont know much guys personally running them, but I've seen A LOT of guys on this forum running them.
My past and current set of tires (on my previous jeep and now on my runner) have been the kevlar MT/R. LOVE UM!

My final 2 cents on this would be to find people running both the tires your looking at, in similar terrain, and ask about their thoughts.

Maxxis Bighorn M/T's

Noisy.... but look good... great traction off-road, and wear fairly well.

I wouldn't go with BFG A/T's... unless you like throwing stones at your rocker panels, and sides of your truck. (I've run them before..... hated them).

I run these too in 255/85, they were very quiet at first, but have gotten a bit louder as well. I have had them about 1.5-2 years, and ~10k miles. I really have nothing bad to say about them at all. They were also one of the lighter tires in that size, and seem to have excellent tire wear also.

I'll recommend them.

I've been extremely happy with my Duractracs - no change to road noise, ride, and haven't noticed any impact to mileage either. Plus, they look great and have kicked arse in the snow (but I suspect you're not too concerned with that part).

I've thought about some Mickey's, but after having a friend that had the MT Baja Radial Claws that have lasted just over a year, I'm trying to steer clear of them haha.

The Baja Claws are extremely softer compound than the MTZ's and ATZ's. They are an offroad purpose build tire without many compromises, thus the soft, fast wearing compound. My MTZ's have about 10K miles on them now and still look damn near new.

FYI - ATZ's got a re-design that looks pretty badass that should be out soon if not already.


From your original choices - I loved my old KM2's offroad in the mud/rocks and on the highways. However if you ever see winter with your truck or just hard-packed snow/slush etc, then they suck. Treadwear was good on them....

I bought a set of Kelly Safari TSR's 285s a few weeks ago and have been happy with them so far. I haven't had them in much snow or offroading, but they are a quiet aggressive all-terrain tire. They are Kellys version of the Duratracs, but I have heard they have a little harder rubber compound and therefore you should get more miles out of them. I like the tread pattern better then the Duratracs. Check them out. I do have pics if you want to see them on my 4Runner.

I just called the local tire place and got a quote on 3 tires.

1. BFG KM2s- $1200
2. Goodyear Duratracs- $977
3. Toyo Open Country AT2 in size 295s-$917

This is with everything included and also an alignment. How do these prices sound? KM2s are most likely out of my price range so I'm leaning heavily toward the Duratracs or AT2s. The AT2s are .3" bigger and I think they have a bit beefier sidewall. They are the extreme version and are almost 9lbs heavier per tire than the Duratracs, this is my only concern. They also come with a 50,000 mile warranty.

Those are pretty good prices considering they are doing an alignment to, I would keep your old tires if they have some tread and sell them on craigslist.

I wouldn't be worried about tire weight but thats just me my 265/75/16's weight 65lbs each they are loadrange E but we have alot of sharp slate in South Dakota so cutting open tires is common.

The BFG Rugged Terrains look nice to and are cheaper yet, not very aggresive though.

My dad has the km2s on his jeep and they've been great. He should easily get 50k and I mean easy. They're just so damn expensive. I think I've decided on the AT2s, they look great all around. And with the 50,000 mile tread warranty, you can't go wrong.

I'm lost likely ordering the AT2s tomorrow. I am however worried that they're gonna mount everything up and then the tires aren't gonna fit without rubbing. Could anyone confirm if they will work or not without spacers?

FJ Wheels- 16x7.5, 4.5" backspace, and +15 mm offset
Toyo AT2s- 295/75/16, 11.6" width
