Yes, if you have an aftermarket bumper or roof basket to carry them on. My stock 5th gen has no carrying options other than inside the vehicle which is illegal and unsafe. I was really getting excited about a larger tank

I remember looking into it once. If I recall, you can carry 5 gal almost everywhere. After that it was a state by state regulation.

Re read his message. He said it is virtually impossible to make a replacement tank or an auxiliary tank. If there were a way around the law it would have been done for Jeeps.

I was thinking of going this route to add 2.5 gal container outside the vehicle. See if you can find any flaws in the logic:

Since the wheel is upside down from the intended design, attach the bracket from the top using either short wheel studs or lug bolts from an old VW


Can would be recessed within the spare tire. A simple twist and it would drop. A padlock can be installed at the bottom of the shaft to keep it secure (and from dropping unintentionally)

The company never got CARB certification, so officially the container cannot carry gasoline. It was always intended and constructed for that purpose, however.
