To Buy or Not to Buy...

let me preface this with a little about my self. i'm fifteen, about to be sixteen, and a 4runner will be my first car, and my parents and I are basically splitting the cost. Ive been browsing craigslist and have been looking for a t4r under 8k. so, in an incredibly random stroke of luck, i ran across a 1999 v6 with a 5speed, 4x4, AND and factory rear elocker. i realize how rare this combo is, and for $5000, it would leave me plenty of room to add a lift, tires, anything else... but this truck has 251,000 miles on it. is that too high mileage to still run reliably for any extended period of time? I'd love you guys thoughts and opinions as to whether this would be a solid buy or not.\

Thanks!

5 speed and eLocker are both way overrated compared to lower miles.

At 251k miles how is that engine running?

Is it all original?

Was anything replaced? (LBJs, Steering Rack, Brakes, Radiator etc etc)

How is the compression? You should definitely request a local mechanic do a compression test. It won't cost more than $75 and is a must for that many miles. The seller might not like this but is a fair request and you're paying.

Personally I would take the $5k and find one with 150k miles. Automatics are great as Long as they are working and an locker can be added.

This 4r is indeed a somewhat rare find. However, are you talking miles or kilometres? As I'm from Sask. myself, the Winter's tend to be really hard on vehicles, especially Japanese that aren't that impervious to rust....
So, things to consider:
1. How rusty/ condition of the body
2. Does the owner have maintenance history/ work performed.... has it had any major work done
3. THIS IS IMPORTANT, get it mechanically inspected!

If this 4r has 250K KM that's pretty much average for a 99' (mine has 230K) as long as its been maintained, 250K KM wouldn't be a huge worry. Has the TB/WP been replaced 50K ago? Is the oil really dirty (gives you an indication as to whether the owner cares enough-- even when he's trying to sell), How quiet is the engine--- is it smooth at idle and acceleration, brakes--- does it shake or pull, how loose is the steering any torn joint boots(CV's,TRE's,BJ's)? Condition of tires? Suspension---- is the rear sagging? Does everything work? These trucks are quite rugged but, like anything else, if it hasn't been maintained, you could be, at best, be looking at some work, and major effort at worst (I did an engine replacement after 2yrs--- luckily it wasn't hard). Do not let your desire over-rule your common sense. Get the facts, at least answer these questions and make your decision. Check out this link:

Personally, I love the 4r. I've had lots of vehicles over the years and this is one of the best to work on. My last truck was a GMC Suburban and it was expensive and painful to work on--- it seemed everything associated with maintenance was an afterthought! none of the components were particularly durable-- junk!
By the way, one of my sons just passed his Learners test here in BC, and he can't sit his "N" drivers road test for a year, is that the same in Sask? If its the same, at least you'd be able to learn to drive and do mech. work on it till you get your "N"..... My son turned 16 in July, I wish he had the budget you have! You're lucky, when I was 15, my dad banned me from purchasing until I was 16 and licensing it till I had my drivers license! Be patient, do your homework (on the truck!!) and don't rush if there are any major question marks about this truck, you have plenty of time to find the right truck and time before you're going to be in a position to drive it on the road! Good Luck!!!

I would say that IF you do end up buying that one, don't spend the money on exterior things like a lift, tires etc etc, but on maintenance stuff. These engines can last a LONG time, but there are plenty of other things that will probably need replacing at that mileage. Get a good base going and then start modding it. I know, it's not the most appealing angle to go. Especially at 16. But you'll be much happier in the long run. Trust us old guys. Piece of mind goes a long way.

Make sure to check for frame rust/rot. just as poleclimber63 said.

the body could be perfect but the frame could be rotted.... so make sure to check.

I do agree. I got a auto Sr5 4x4. Do I wish I had a 5speed elocker, sure. But knowing how Clean Nd well maintained my car is I'd never trade it or sell it for anything. Nothing can beat a lower mile, well maintained and no rust. You got to ask, DO YOU REALLY NEED 5SPEED ELOCKER ? If you got money you can always get arb lockers and swap manual. With money anything is possible.

And at your age. Reliability is #1 , there will be A LOT TO UPDATE and change at 250k. From fluids to belts to more. That's not cheap if your not doing.the work or buying quality parts. I think you should be patient a little more. Because bills start kicking in but real quick lol.

thanks for all the quick replies!

first off let me say i have no clue why it says im in sask.... im in alabama! lol rust isnt a problem here as we dont salt the roads in winter.

the truck is rust free
the owner says he has taken great care of the truck, replaced oil and filters every 3k miles, and he also did the timing belt and water pump at 200k

he said that the only body damage is a small dent in the left hand corner of the bumper

basically the reason that i was still interested in this truck with 251k miles is the fact that he has kept up maintenance with it. we havent been able to go look at it in person but when we do we will probably have a mechanic run a compression test on it so make sure everything checks out

You haven't driven it yet. That's fair but know this:

At 250k+ miles there are a lot of normal wear and tear that needs to be replaced (or will soon) to keep the truck anywhere near tip top.

* Brake rotors and pads
* Steering rack and outer tie rods
* Ball joints
* entire suspension (F & R)
* control arm bushings

I'm not try to discourage you but just make you aware that most of the stuff in the buyers guide eventually does fail if you keep the truck long enough. Those aren't lemon items but rather things that often break at high miles, even multiple on the same truck.

Of course he does, he's trying to sell it. I'm not saying he hasn't, but don't just take his word for it - make him show you the proof, and check it out thoroughly before agreeing to purchase.

yeah I was just breezing through the ad trying to give y'all the gist of it... I won't make any judgements on the condition of the truck until I see it in person :)

It's easier to swap a locker into a clean low mileage truck than it is to swap an engine in a locked truck. It all depends on the condition. That said, if compression is good and everything checks out, the engine is healthy and there's no reason to doubt its reliability. I ended up being anal about buying a 3rd gen. I held out for a 5 speed, elocker, rust free SR5 with 85k miles & basically new condition, but I paid a ridiculous premium for it. Could have swapped a locker into a much cheaper truck and called it a day. But, to me, it was definitely worth the cost.

My opinion. 5 speeds are cool, but autos are just fine too. Run a carfax on it. Its money you'll be glad you spent. DON'T BE AFRAID TO WALK AWAY. THERE WILL BE OTHER RUNNERS, likely in better condition for a similar price. Take your time. I wish I had. I spent way to much fixing and maintaining before all my mods come in. Set yourself up for success. :boxer: and like others, specifically Hepar said, MAINTENANCE FIRST. Lift, Tires, yeah its all cool, (really cool ::thumb3:) but without a good solid foundation, it will fail regardless. Seafoam, Replace all fluids, Brakes, Steering rack, Tie Rods, Battery, etc. Make sure she is perfect before you mod her.
