to COSTA RICA in my 2nd Gen - WHAT TO TAKE?

Hello - I want to take my 2nd gen 4runner ('95) to Costa Rica in a couple of months. I plan on being gone for about 1 month.

I am in the process of doing some pre-trip maintenance including tuning, draining fluids and replacing belts and some hoses. I will also get some new shocks.

Car has 220K miles on it but runs great.

My timing belt is fairly new (40K miles)

I want to put together a kit of tools and parts I might need on the road.

For example, I saved 2 spark plug wires, one shorter and one longest, from the old set to use as an emergency. Also, I will take a couple of spark plugs.

I would love everyone's input.

Which hoses/belts are likely to break on the road?

What problems with the car might we encounter that could be fixed just by having the tool or part on board?

What tools would you never leave home without?

Wow, sounds like a great trip. I am not sure what hoses to take, but I would take a few clamps and some duct tape. I have used duct tape to save me in a few situations, when one of the hoses spring a leak.:arrow:

My friends 92 had trouble with alternator belt it would break if you floored that was age though.

I found that you could pretty much take a part the whole truck with these wreches/sockets:
8MM, 10MM, 12MM, 14MM, 17MM, 19MM, 22MM, 24MM.
I would carry those wrenches and sockets, with a nice ratchet and a couple of various extensions. I would carry at least another alternator belt, because all is lost without a fuctionable charging system.. you can deal without power steering and A/C. I would take a 5 gallon jerry can or two of gas with you, just in case. And you cant go anywhere without duct tape, you'd be surprised how it could save you. I would run out and buy a tire repair kit, with plugs. A can or two of "Fix-a-flat" wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Bring a bottle of coolant also, not the 50/50, the concentrated stuff, because you can mix it with the couple of gallons of water you should carry. Some automotive fuses would be a good idea. May seem like a lot, but I like to overdue it just in case something would happen, then I don't have what I need. Have fun in Costa Rica.

PS.. Extra oil wouldn't hurt, either.
