To go with Toytec or SS 1.2?

I'm at a point where my T4R is in desperate need of complete suspension overhaul.

alignment shop told me they were unable to do the alignment because the outer tie rods and rear lateral rod bushings were completely toast.

They also recommended changing both front and rear shocks and coils because they were old and weak. I agree with them because the thing feels like it's going to flip over 80km/h. I was planning on doing a 2" lift anyway though so now's the time to do it all before the snow falls.

So
- What do people recommend for tie rods when they do a lift? Stock OEM?
- My panhard/lateral rod bushings are gone so I was planning on getting an SS adjustable one. This make sense for only 2-3" lift? Or do people recommend the the drop kit?
- I want a suspension setup that is comfortable for city/highway driving (this is my daily for now) and good for the occasional weekend camping trip/4 wheel exploring. I'm new to 4wheeling and we have some great trails near me so i might get into it more. Would people suggest the SS 1.2 kit or the toytec boss or ultimate coilovers for what i plan to do?

I'm used to coilovers on my cars and love them but want a smooth planted feeling for the T4R if that's possible. Right now it feels like crap because the back end is currently tracking out of line at random. Takes a huge amount of concentration just to keep it in the lane at highway speeds.

I'm assuming you mean Sonoran steel vs toytec... I can't really comment on the toytec, but I have the 1.2 on my 00 limited, and it rides great. It's no audi, but it does what it supposed to do with some great flex. I've got the bilsteins set up one notch from the top in front and seems to level it perfectly.

While you're in there, be sure to replace your bushings on your steering rack too, theyre probably causing a lot of the tracking issues you're talking about.

my vote is for toytec. they are always very helpful and have great customer service. i think you get more for your money too with the toytec kit, as i believe they are adjustable where the SS kit is not

I was debating on those two for over a year. Then when my neighbour smashed my truck and I now have decided to run heavier bumpers with accessories....so I have had to decide.
I am going with the boss lift kit from toytec. With total chaos arms.


I called up toytec and told them to google images of the roads I drive on, they're that bad.


They seem to know what they are talking about. You will get a million opinions here. My suggestion is to call up tanner from toytec at extension 102 and describe your uses etc. I think you will be pleased you did. Best of luck.


Many people here run both and seem happy. I have seen a few comments though along the lines of 'if I did it over again I would go toytec'

I'd suggest more than anything else you call ToyTech and talk to them


Also call Steve at SS as well. I have the SS 1.2 (with adjustable billstiens and the LC shocks in the rear) and I like it.

That doesn't mean I think it is better than TT. Give them a call and a chance to sell you on it.

I"ve been more than pleased with the SS 1.2 lift on my 97 as well. Steve has been terrific at answering all of my questions and if you check out my thread you will see he pops in from time to time unsolicited to give help and advice and keep me on the straight and narrow. Not many vendors take that much of an interest in helping their customers and fellow runner owners.

For the flip side of the coin my recently acquired 06 has a toytec lift setup on it with billy shocks and it rides really nice too. The 06 is much softer riding but its a different gen truck and a hodge podge lift (not a coil over in front).

Probably can't go wrong with either but I suggest calling both.

One more thing though, what else should I replace while I'm at it? Are bushing kits available? poly etc? I hear you on the steering rack bushings. I'll be looking at rockauto probably.

I've been agonizing over what setup to go with, too, and have not yet decided.

I will likely use my toy tec with the piece it yourself kit from sonoron..

Hey man, exactly, that is what I am doing.


I think to determine which is better, you need to discuss your uses and needs with someone from toytec, I had him google image my roads here etc, described my usage, And I settled on the boss kit. I will be adding the piece it yourself kit from sonoron as mentioned.
