Took a little bump in the rump... any updates on rear bumper options available?

First I figured you guys and gals might like to see how the 4Runner held up compared to some GM trucks.

This guy:

smacked the back of this lady:

which shoved her into me:

where I came away with very minor damage:

Now the question ... does anyone have any updates on rear bumper options for the 3rd gen? I know about CBI and Shrockworks already. I assume that's the only ones still, but figured it was worth an ask. I see a lot of hit and miss reviews on the CBI, and my emails to Shrockworks with a couple of simple questions have gone unanswered, so I assume I'm still on my own to build what I want. Sure would be a lot easier to buy one and bolt it on though! lol

Same here rear hitch took everything. Removing the rear hitch to replace the bumper sucked the big one!!

I've been wanting to upgrade the rear for a while now. I've been planning on changing to a roof top tent rather than the current in vehicle sleeping option, but will need to clear the fuel cans off the roof first. One of the things this brought to my attention is that had I already done this and had a tire carrier back there, the damage would have actually been worse. I'm not sure what the ultimate solution is. Larger tank, and a back up fuel sender maybe? lol

Haha, I snapped 4 bolts & twisted one of the hitch brackets removing mine last summer. One snapped bolt is still in there. Heat, WD40 & drilling did not get it out. LOL

This is amazing! You are lucky man, I was rear ended on the 101N on July 31st and took $3,500 of body work to fix mine. If my rear hatch wasn't jacked I would have cashed out and gotten a bumper upgrade

I'm impressed there's that much damage to that front with so little to your rear bumper, even with it hitting your hitch mostly.

Great time for an upgrade.

Glad you're okay. I was rear-ended shortly after taking ownership of my 4Runner. Some guy futzing with his phone ran into me in stop and go traffic on I-5. It was low speed, but his bull bar spread out damage all across my hatch and rear bumper. I wish that I had accelerated my purchase of my aftermarket bumper. This way, I could have just put the money that went toward buying an overpriced OEM replacement towards getting a REAL bumper. At the time, I didn't know if I was going to go that route.

Another vote for a 4X Innovations rear bumper. I have been very happy with this thing. But just about anything in the offroad aftermarket would be a thousand times better than the flimsy metal OEM bumpers.

Oh... Don't take that hitch off unless you replace the rear bumper. THAT is your real bumper. It is connected to the frame, unlike the rear bumper, and is solid. It provides all the real protection on rear end duty.

You're on the wrong coast! lol I know the struggle from growing up in the midwest. It's been quite a treat out here in California to be able to unbolt 20+ year old exhaust with a 3/8" ratchet! My best suggestion for you is to put the WD-40 down and get a penetrating oil. Standard WD isn't meant to be used in place of things like PD Blaster or Kroil. It just somehow ended up with the reputation to do that.

That is what I thought mine was going to look like before I got out. That's actually why if you watched the dash cam video the audio cuts off when it did! lol

Get lots of lift or start cutting off some lowriders? I know I got super lucky in all this.

I had the audio off before the camera died, and I needed a replacement. Sadly I have been too "busy" to set up the new one properly lol.

Insurance company dropped the ball on getting an appraiser out to me, so I'm going to be submitting my own photos this afternoon. Hopefully this means I can get things going sooner than later.
