I think that is *most* of the various bits up to date... a bit of an information overload!
My latest project is the Rear Axle....
After upgrading the Tundra fronts I wanted to get rid of the rear drums...
They are not that bad in all honesty.. perfectly adequate.. but drums are a bit... 1950s.. so after some searching about I managed to source a Landcruiser Prado rear axle.
I specifically wanted a Prado one, as opposed to the natively sold Colorado as all of the UK supplied trucks had E lockers.. most of which had rusted away.
I originally wanted an E locker years ago, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that an LSD like a TrueTrac would be more suited for me...
My logic was an E locker is great that one time when its locked off road... all other times its just an open diff and more to go wrong... I do struggle slightly with wheel spin... I often try to pull out of a side road to filter into traffic and end up sitting there spinning my inner tyre looking like an utter douchebag (yeah, lifted trucks are NOT a big thing here in the UK, people think its weird).. for this reason I figured a Trutrac would be better all the time, on road and off road, just not "as good" off road as a E locker, air locker or Detroit locker...
I then decided to get a front one too... because.... matching.
I noticed that the Landcruiser axle had a different final drive, so I was going to need to regear my front to match... at this point I decided that what I actually need is to regear both...
I initially settled on 4.56 ratio gears, as although I run 33s, I don't suffer from acceleration problem, but it is quite loud when cruising... My girlfriend and I are planning a road trip to Poland in the truck this summer, so I thought I'd be sensible and stay 4.56.
I wasn't... Randy's Ring and pinion (the first people who would deal with, so many other suppliers ignored my emails for $2000+ of business!) were out of stock of 4.56 that day so I went 4.88... I have the extra revs to make up for it, I figured at 80 mph cruising... its a 500 RPM difference.... and my truck will get there faster... so.. go for it!
The parts arrived this week and are still sitting in my living room.
On inspecting my "new" axle I jet washed off all the mud and went over it. unfortunately the drain part of the right hand side upper link mount was blocked.. it had been left with sitting water in It and was quite rusted.. I say quite rusted, it would probably be ok... but I have been told under heavy acceleration I pick my front left wheel clean off the ground... I'm not going to risk that part failing and possibly me killing myself, or worse still my rig
So I accidentally ordered a new one..
So shiny and new and not rusted!
I also needed to redo my rear axle links. I'd say they were the original factory fitted ones... I've done 120k miles now.. so the plan was to remove, paint and polybush them... until I saw something else on that universal portal of most things I seem to buy for my truck... Ebay.
Full Toyota seals, disks, pads, fitting kits and wheel bearings have arrived at my dealership today.. I'll collect on Friday..
Then its time to get rebuilding! Watch this space.
