TorqueOfTheDevil’s Build Thread ..::1UZ-FE VVTi Hilux Surf::..

This is hands down one of the best build threads I have ever read :hatsoff: Next time I visit Surrey I might have to contact you so I can see this beauty in person

Everything looks great so far! How have you been enjoying 4 wheel discs?

Did you use the axle out of a J90 or J120? I wish those parts were easier to get in the states.

It was a KZJ95.. They are good so far (especially with the Tundra fronts) the road in the pics above is a private driveway shared with one other house, I met my neighbour head on yesterday in his range rover.. I stopped first!

The handbrake still isn't quite adjusted right, they are known to be a be of a pain point on the Landcruisers.. I keep meaning to do it one weekend!

I still have my oil coolers to fab brackets for and fit, and some new side steps that are in better condition, A new AC condenser, and pump, AC idle up signal converter, as well as a speedo correction module to fit too...

This is am awesome build, you know, besides for the steering wheel accidently being installed on the wrong side. I've always wanted a diesel hilux.

Meh.... Diesel is really overrated!

Good news everyone!!

I ran a 15.9 Standing Quarter today! - Full road trim (some guys "cheat" and put factory wheels on, lose the spare etc)

The guy in the factory GT-86 REALLY didn't expect that!!

Vids to follow!

Damn what was the setup on that RX-7? I heard his turbo spool up and then he was gone.

No idea, but before he ran I noticed that all it had in the interior was a drivers seat and a roll cage.. no carpets or anything.. that combined with Hoosier slicks at the back made me suspect that it was going to be fast...

Ran 11.26 @133.85 MPH :zoom:

Ha no chance for you! Was this an all-comers informal kind of meet with no brackets? You raced with what you brought no matter if it was drag prepped or not?

Yes a regular RWYB.

There were rail cars with parachutes, and stock diesel Hilux double cabs on 35s.

Even a racing motorbike and sidecar complete with sidecar passenger!

I did one of these in my 2000 Camry the only thing I did to prep it was take out the rear seat and front passenger seat. I beat a Ford F-350 massive diesel truck and then lost to a drag prepped Camaro.

It makes it interesting!

No real prep here, just tyre pressures and a trans oil change that was due..

Drag racing isn't a big thing in the UK, there are only 7 strips, and the one I went to is closing down this season. (noise complaints) so you get an odd match of what turns up!

wow, i must say for a computer tech person, this is like borderline unbelievable (in a good way)!, even for a gear head this is amazing:yo: very impressive. i have been considering a 1uz swap for some time now, though i do believe im going to go with the 2uz as its more of a truck motor with low end torque and sourcing one that will work will be easier. -has to be a same year or newer for emissions reasons. i love the detail you give this, and as a fellow CDO'er (ocd -but you know, we have to keep things in order) i can really appreciate the time and effort into this -im lazy about something so i just live with lots of regret and dissatisfaction lol. again very well done and clean and probably one of my top 5 favorites -defiantly 4ROTM worthy!

im peanut butter jealous

Thanks guys! It definitely helps to motivate me :)

No recent updates, infact I've been so busy with work and what not I have barely even driven it!

I still need to finish my front suspension/spindle re fit, I've had the parts for months!

Ready to go on:

  • New OEM Toyota Lower arms/Bushes
  • New OEM Toyota Wheel bearings/seals etc
  • New OEM Lower ball joints.
  • Used hub carriers to be refurbished with Total Chaos Spindle gussets
  • Replacement revised design SPC upper ball joints

I have also decided that I don't like the rear adjustable arms, so I'm going to replace with new OEM.

I have also been stock piling bits for my impending A/C overhaul and have the following ready for my attention:
  • New OEM Expansion Valve (Arrived yesterday!)
  • New OEM Receiver Dryer
  • New OEM Condenser
  • Used LS400 Compressor (I figured I'd prefer used OEM as opposed to new not, and new OEM in the UK is silly money)
  • full set of OEM AC seals
  • 2x Spal 9" push fans (for Condenser)
  • LS400 A/C pressure switch (plus plug) to add pressure activated condenser fan control
  • 1UZ VVTi A/C ECU idle up control module to mimic the LS400 idle up signal

This will be a pretty big job, as I want to fully flush the system though, including removing the evaporator, so dash out... while its out I want to redo some wiring so it looks more factory when its apart. :tape2:

The A/C control module should be good, it allows my to have the A/C clutch powered by the ECU, so not only do I get proper idle up when the clutch engages, but it will also disconnect the clutch at full throttle, and has a sensor so if the pump seizes it will disengage the clutch, to save the serpentine belt (and causing me to lose power, water pump and power steering)

Also, while doing the from A/C fans I plan to fit the parts I already have for my Engine and Transmission oil coolers:
  • 2x Setrab 235MM 19 row oil coolers
  • Mishimoto AN-10 external oilstat (for engine oil)
  • Custom AN-10 oil take off plate

I'll need to fab up suitable brackets, and still need some oil fittings, but not sure which ones until I see how it all fits. I'll also need to relocate my air horns.

So yes, the pile of parts is growing and I've STILL not got down to fitting them. The good news is that I have my garage space back, so I can work at night, regardless of weather..

Funny, once I take out the dash and AC, the only parts I'd have not removed and refitted on the entire truck will be the doors and tailgate!

Other random bits I've got ready to fit:
  • Interior light module, adds light fade up and down, and a 30 second delay timer once the door is shut. its a silly creature comfort that I enjoy on the BMWs.
  • "Dual Window Voltage Comparator" and latching circuit relay, so I can activate a relay from my LS400 Cruise stalk to activate cruise control, and -hopefully- get the Factory LS400 cruise control working, using the fly by wire throttle.
  • Speed pulse signal converter, to get my speedometer dialled in perfectly after fitting 4.88s.
