I think its easy to armchair quarterback. I'm living in OK for 9 months, and the storms here have intense winds. I don't have a garage, and parking under a tree can provide you excellent protection from the beachball sized hail we've gotten. Damnied if you do, damned if you don't.

My sister JUST moved there (Brentwood). After living in Nashville and having a Jeep Grand Cherokee :gun5:, they got a house in brentwood and a new Highlander. I haven't been in Nashville in about a year. When I do, I fly and rent a beater to get around. Driving to Nashville, for me, takes about 14 hours (straight) so my runner most likely never be down there. :crybaby:

Got the quote back from the body shop on my wife's Malibu Maxx....$8,100 in repair costs! For a $7,000 vehicle, that one is totaled. Still waiting on my estimate. I bet it doesn't touch $13,300 which is what it would need to be close to to be totaled. My guess is $11,000. Any other guesses?

I think this thing would keep you fairly well protected in a rollover even w/out the RSCA (which I don't have).

Man, after seeing the additional pics, I"m not supprised at the damage total. Has the insurance company looked at it yet? Just remember the shop's estimates will always be too high, that's why I have a job!
Assuming it is infact totaled, give your insurance company a chance before assuming they are out to screw you. They are bound by law to pay "average retail value" depending on your state's laws. Average retail value is more of a market value rather than blue book. Who knows, they might supprise you! Looks like a clean ride so you shouldn't have many deductions unless there's any previous hail damage or anything. Hope it goes well for you. I'm sure I speak for the other insurance guys here when I say I'd be glad to help anyway I can.

Thanks for the info. I should hear from the ins. company in the next couple of days. I may be back for some advice! The biggest downside to the vehicle being repaired is the month of repairs.

Think I might be the only one to give it a chance of being totaled. I still stick to my original statement. There is always more damage which your closeup pics reveal. Also, Insurance companies take into consideration other cost factors (on top of parts, prep, labor, paint, towing) such as rental car during down time as well. If the car will be in the shop for a month as you mentioned, that's at least another $1k (Compact car), more for a comparable SUV rental on top of all repairs. Hopefully you have rental car coverage.
Once again, I am very glad you and your wife are ok. What will you replace the Malibu Maxx with?
Still waiting to hear from the auditor. I did hear that State Farm uses NADA retail value, which for my 4Runner is $24,500!!!! I only paid $22,000 for it 2 years ago with 50,000 less miles. With that value the damages are only 64% of retail value. I am still up in the air but am looking for a replacment anyway.
The wife's Malibu is being replaced with a Subaru Forester. Likely an '05 or '06.

I agree. I think you might be surprised. My '03 Tacoma was in a bad wreck in an ice storm before Christmas. From the initial looks of things, it didn't look that bad, but once you stare at it for an hour, you start finding all the hidden damages. I figured I was going to be SOL with the insurance settlement, but was pleasantly surprised. It was definitely a market value and not NADA or Blue Book used, and essentially list price at regional dealers for an exact replacement.
Long story short- looks like a great 4R, and odds are good it'll work out. You didn't cause this accident.

Uh, with that much damage I would rather have it totaled and start with something else. Jeez, if they have to replace the roof section and qtrs it may not ever be the same. Just my opinion of course, there are some good shops out there but...
I've had a few cars that have had fairly involved repairs (undiscolsed to me upon purchase of course, found out after) and they seemed to tend to leak water. Now that I am older and wiser I inspect with a fine tooth comb, drives the seller crazy!
Again, I would try and have it totaled. Guarantee that once they get into it they fill find additional damage, they always do (I used to be an insurance adjuster too)

That sucks. You won't make any ground negotiating. Either it's totaled or it's not. That's one of the down sides to haveing an expensive vehicle. For example, I had a customer with a $35,000 truck that rolled down a mountian. It had 20k in damages and still didn't total. Needed a entire cab, all doors, hood, and so on. Sucks for that guy, but the vehicle is not totaled unless there's 70% damage (7 years or newer). I wish you the best. Main thing I would do in your shoes is use a shop THEY suggest rather than trying to go to YOUR shop. Reason is I've dealt w/ tons of shops that say they have a lifetime warantee, then are able to get out of paying for something that comes up later. If you go where the insurance company recomends, you will be able to get a guarantee in writing if you want it. Very important for such a large repair. Also good news is that with no police report, there's a chance car fax would never find out about the accident (not that you would hide anything), and that all depends on your states laws and such.
Alight, update time. So it may have taken almost 6 weeks, but I got my beloved 4Runner back from the repair shop. I have to say, they did an amazing job. I met the owner of the franchise of Carstar and he introduced me to all their staff (all over 50 y.o. by the way) and their facility. You could eat off the floor and there was zero clutter in the whole shop. There weren't even any tools laying around, only what was being used at the time. He showed me how they paint match texture by manufacturer and knew off hand the subtleties of Toyota paint.
It may have taken a while, but they did a great job. Even my moonroof rattle I had before the tree landed on it is now gone. It basically looked like it came off the show room floor, interior and all.
I wasted zero time before breaking it in. This past weekend I went up to Northern WI with my wife and two dogs to do some Ruffed Grouse hunting. I felt a little bad driving it down some of the overgrown logging roads but that is why I have a 4Runner. The little tree branch scratches will buff out. A good time was had by all. I felt like even the 4Runner had a good time. It got to stretch its legs on 18" deep water, high speed gravel roads, muddy trails and we even slept with it. What a homecoming!!!!
