Towed ~4k lbs on auto trailer, went well... now some questions on upgrades

So I towed my track car a couple hours with the T4R (04 V8) for the first time, and it was actually pretty fun! Plenty of go power, extremely stable even in relatively high winds with predictably solid and true steering, and reasonable stopping power for not being braked. It's a two axle trailer w/ brakes, just haven't got a brake controller yet (and was being super careful).

The only thing I didn't like are the rear shocks: they just can't keep up with the trailer on rough highways, started pogoing bad a few times. Truck is completely stock right now. Trying to decide now if upgrading to Bilstein shocks, or putting in rear air helper springs (or both) would be the best way to fix this problem.

Also, anyone have a good recommendation for a brake controller, as well as the part # for the OEM pigtail / harness if needed? My truck didn't come with one when I got it used. Thanks.

Chances are you exceeded the tongue weight on your runner. I'd take it to a local scale and verify your not putting yourself in a bad situation...

The tongue weight was set around 550 lbs. Truck looked even front to rear, it wasn't visually sagging too far or anything; rode very well for the most part, there are just several sections of undulating bumps which normally are just a minor annoyance, but was bordering on violent while towing the car trailer. Hoping there's a way to make that better is all.

Search Airlift 1000. many have these bags and love them! If you want a lift as well, you can get OME HD springs and shocks, that would do the trick. Good luck! :cheers:

Ah, thanks for the name on the airlift 1000, that was the one I think I'd seen mentioned before. I'm pretty much deciding now whether to wait (live with it for now) and then get really nice new springs and shocks once I need to replace them... not sure how much longer the stock XREAS will last (at 61k miles now and they're feeling a little soft). Or, get the Airlift kit now for use with stock springs, and reuse it on a less-agressive upgraded kit in the future.

Im in the same situation. I have 76k on my XREAS so im gonna put on the DS kit i have in my garage and wait till one of the springs sh!ts the bed and swap them for OME light coils. Cant wait!

Get the Bilstein's and add air bags in the springs. The Prodigy brake controller can't be beat!
